Alrighty then. I looked and I have two LMHOST. sam files on my computer. What should I do? Delete them? When I ping the sites that I cannot access, I get a message that it timed out. From that info, do you have any idea what could be going on?

what exactly will that fix do? I would like to know before I go and screw up my registry. I of course would want to back it up, which I don't know how.

The only new programs I have downloaded are the ones suggested by people to help them try to figure out what is going on with my computer.
My firewall is XP. My anti-virus is Mcaffee. My malware is search and destroy.

When I suspected that I had some ad stuff, I used search and destroy and found some. I got rid of it using S&D. Then I used mcaffee to search for virus and found the trojan and virus. I pushed the button that said get rid of them.

Jon here, hopping aboard for what seems to be a much needed resolution.
I, too, feel Jamica's pain. My home business is suffering severely as I cannot ship any orders.

The problem occured only after using unsecured wireless hotspots - go figure.

I think it is worth noting, though, that we all developed this problem around the same time. My computer started acting up on July 5th, Jamica's (it seems) in early July as well, etc etc. Maybe someone who has another computer can find a fix?

I search google and find many fixes, but when I click the links - no go.

AVG shows NO virus. Ad-Aware has cleaned me all up... I don't know what to do.

Instead of deleting LMHOSTS.SAM - I simply renamed it. Same thing I suppose.

The registry tweak changes the MTU size of packets. I have used this after exhausting other troubleshooting options, and have had it work. I can't give a really good explanation why it works, but it is worth a shot. As far as backing up your registry you can do that through the backup utility on XP or you can just back up the single registry key by exporting it and saving it through the registry editor.

This parameter specifies the Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) for a network interface. By optimizing the MTU setting you can gain substantial network performance increases, especially when using dial-up modem connections.

MTU stands for Maximum Transmission Unit and in basic terms, it defines the maximum size of a packet that can be transferred in one frame over a network.

Download cleanup and do a scan. it will delete all temp files which could be the cause of this.

Virus, you really need to pay more attention my friend. He has already deleted all of these files and this is obviously not the problem.


Just to verify, you said you didnt know anything about proxies. You need to go into internet options and click on the connections tab. You then neen to click on your connection if dial up and settings. Make sure proxies are unchecked. If using high speed then go to same place and click on LAN settings and make sure it is unchecked here.

Umm, what's the point giving suggestions/instructions if you have no idea about what the user has already done with someone else? I mean, if you only know the problem but not any solutions the user has tried, then there's no idea to post it.

Assuming that we all have the same issue here I will reply on the behalf of my fellow victims, to save a little time.

-clearing cache, cookies, temp files, or resetting DNS does nothing.

-we are unable to even PING THE IP ADDRESSES of such common sites as www.paypal.com, yes, 100% loss.

-your suggestions of software to download are appreciated but unfortunately do not help. If everyone else is afflicted as I am, they are not able to download any new software. I personally can get all the way to the download screen but then it times out.

-deleting, renaming, or interrogating the LMHOSTS file is again no help

-there is no other host listed in my hosts file besides 127.0.0.1 - no sign of a hijack there.

-my updated AVG finds NO traces of viruses, trojans, or spyware.

-lavasoft ad-aware (also updated) concurs, nothing found that wasn't removeable. Removed the one item I had, no difference.

-I HAVE PROXIES DISABLED. Don't mean to shout but I do mean to emphasize. This is not a proxy problem.

-for some reason at the hotel last night when I went to paypal's IP (not the DNS name, to illiminate that as well) it did the same thing and said it could not access '0.0.0.1' - BUT WHY WAS IT TRYING?

-****IMPORTANT****
The 2 or 3 websites I have found that do work have IP's beginning with 6's.THOSE THAT DO NOT WORK BEGIN WITH 216, 217, ETC.

...Ergo...

I believe this is a virus of some sort, but cannot get rid of it.

Anyone?
I typed all this on a blackberry, I truly hope it comes to fruition

Now, it MAY be because I am at a new hotel tonight, but IT WORKS NOW! This seems unlikely, because it didn't work at the last 3 hotels on my road trip. Maybe 1 of the above solutions works, which is why I posted them.

I am going to stay subscribed to the above thread in hopes that I can give back and help anyone else who has this annoying little problem.

Well I am glad your problems seems to be cleared up. My problem, on the other hand still remains. Hope you have continued success.

To others trying to help me,

I still need to know what happens with the ping I did. Anybody know how knowing that info can help me? And I still don't know what to do with the LMHOSTS file, should I delete it or what?

Anxious to purchase some supplies.

Most sites as these and all HTTPS sites do not allow pings.

You still have not said weather or not you disabled proxies. That is one I would check out.

Whoever that quote came from, which wasn't from myself, is nothing to concern yourself over.( i don't mean to be snippy, i just don't like getting grouped in with other people when this is my thread) It has no bearing on my problem. I pinged other sites, not paypal, which I can get to just fine, thank you.

I don't have any proxies enabled. I looked and where it says to check the boxes if you want to use the proxies, they were unchecked.

I apologize if by posting my list I distracted from your problem - I thought we were having the same issue

Did you run over every one of those things? Because as soon as I had done them I had to leave, so I shut down my computer and went off. I typed the list on my berry, and when I came online to transfer the list from my berry to the computer... everything worked.

I am still having problems. I have done all of those, save for the LMHOSTS file thing, I still haven't been told if I should do anything with that. I can download software. AS for my, I did have a virus and a trojan. This thread is actually a continuation of a thread from another part of the board. I am just here because the kind soul who was helping me with my virus and trojan did all he could do. He was a maleware specialist and didn't know what was going on with me not being able ot access some websites. So now I am here hoping someone might be able to help me with my problem.

It gets to be a really pain when you are trying to do something, and you click on a link to go somewhere you need to go and you cannot access the page. I haven't been able to go to my site when I purchase my supplies in a month.
