After returning from vacation I started my computer (which does have dsl) the Windows 98 screen came up in red and the computer would only start in safe mode. Instead of the usual background on the desktop there is an error repeated over and over..."A fatal error in IE occured at.....(if you need the numbers let me know) Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c System cannot function in normal mode. Please check your security settings . Scan you PC with any available anitvirus\spyware remover program to fix problem."
I had previously removed spyware\adware\trojans using the steps you have listed under "Do you suspect a malware infection?" I repeated these steps again for this issue but to no avail. I am a novice so any help you can supply will be greatly appreciated. The following is my HiJackThis log and I thank you in advance! candy

Hi blakesleecl and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. If you haven't logged in go to Geeks to Go and do so. Then proceed to item a.

If you already have logged in, go directly to item a.

a. Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window.
b. In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
c. If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there

2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

4. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

A. Close ALL windows except HJT

B. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')

C. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

You have, among other things, a variant of the About:Blank infection

Trevuren

Thank you and I also hope that you have a great weekens. We will be starting by removing a variant of the About:Blank infection.

1. Download CWShredder

If you are using anything other than Windows xp you may need a zip program.
Please download the evaluation version of
Winzip.

2. Download SpSeHjfix.zip to the desktop.
  • Then right click on the desktop and select new >folder, name it spfix
  • Unzip SpSeHjfix.zip into the new folder.
3. Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.
  • Run 'SpSeHjfix'. and click on "Start Disinfection".
  • When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
  • The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.
If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage.

4. Once it is finished, run CWShredder - Hit The FIX button!

5. Reboot and post a new HJT log and the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix'.

Warning Note: On a few occasions it has been reported that after using the SPSEHjfix you cannot open Internet Explorer. To fix this, go into Control Panel >Internet Options >Programs & press reset web settings, then you can set your home page to what you want on the general tab.

Regards,

I did exactly as you asked however when running spfix the Spybot S&D denied changes to the registry and after running the spfix it did not restart on it's own, I manually restarted and I opened spfix again and it did say my computer was disinfected. CW Shredder did not find anything. Here is the spfix log and then the hjt log.

We still have a couple of Trojans onboard. In addition Spybot is causing us some difficulty by not permitting some registry changes that need to be made.

1. PLease UNINSTALL Spybot completely.

2. Your system has an About:Blank infection as well as other less serious infections.

1. Download the stand alone version of CWShredder
  • Save the program to your Desktop
  • Click on the CWShredder icon, then on the RUN button
  • Click on "Check for Updates"
  • Once the program is updated, close it until needed. DO NOT USE IT NOW
2. If you do not have a zip program please download and install the evaluation version of Winzip.

3. Download SpSeHjfix.zip to the desktop. Make sure it is the version suited to your operating system
  • Then right click on the desktop and select new >folder, name it spfix.
  • Unzip SpSeHjfix.zip into the new folder.
4. Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.

5. Run 'SpSeHjfix'. and click on "Start Disinfection".

When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage

6. Once it is finished run CWShredder - Hit The FIX button!

Hello Trevuren,

I uninstalled Spybot and did as you requested. Again the SPSeHjFix did not restart my computer (so I suspect it didn't find anything). I still have the error message all over my desktop. Here are the new logs you requested:

Oh but it did find something. Check for the R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\se.dll/spage.html entry in your last log and look at your log that preceded the fix.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Open My Computer.
* Select the View menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* In the Hidden files section select Show all files.
* Click OK.

Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Srv32 spool service] C:\WINDOWS\System\spoolsrv32.exe[/B

Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to Start To Safe Mode Using the F8 method in Windows 98/98SE/ME

To start your computer in Safe Mode:
*turn the computer on
*as the computer restarts, press and hold down the Ctrl key until the Windows 98 startup menu appears. (This also works with the F8 key following the same steps)
*Choose Safe mode from the startup menu,
*press Enter
*Windows starts in Safe mode.
*Restart your computer when finished troubleshooting

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following file, and DELETE it (if it is still present):

C:\WINDOWS\System\spoolsrv32.exe

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everytjhing looks now.

Hi Trevuren,

That is why you are the expert and I am the novice! After you pointed out the changes in the logs I did see the difference. And I'm sure you are going to get a good laugh at my expense on this one...the error was still all over my desktop so I went in and changed backgrounds, Waffels Revenge was the background and WP was selected for the wallpaper, I changed it to none and none and the screen is fine now, I tried to change it back to viewing the error on my desktop and Waffles Revenge was still an option but no WP under the wallpaper selections! Anyway, I did as you requested and here is the new HJT log:

Hi Trevuren,

Thanks for all the time and effort you have put into helping me out, I appreciate it more than you could know. Everything appears to be back to normal and running smoothly. Is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening in the future?

Thanks again :tazz:

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

2. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)
