Hi, I have very limited computer knowledge, so please be patient. ;) I just bought a notebook with XP Professional. I downloaded ad aware from lava soft and when I try to update, I keep getting (error retrieving update). I turned off Norton firewall protection and tried again .. I get the same message. Please help :tazz: ;)

You can download the definitions manually here

Otherwise you could try:

To delete the defs.ref file from
Default: C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Personal

and then open Ad-aware SE,

If you wish not to delete it, you could rename the file:

defs.ref.old or something else

Thanks Andy,
I did that and it didn't help. :tazz: Now when I click on update, a blue screen pops up for only a second, I can not even read it. The entire page is full, but it disappears so quickly. Then the computer automatically reboots. Are there hidden firewalls in xp professional that I am not aware of? OR..do I need to configure the connection on my own?

There could not have been anything on there. I just bought my laptop and was installing ad aware. I have it on my desktop and it works fine. The problem has to be some hidden feature in windows xp professional that I don't know about. I am new to this program as well. I have searched and searched and still can not resolve this problem. I thought turning off the firewall would help. I'm lost. :tazz:

Andy,
I uninstalled 1.06 and downloaded the older version of ad aware, it updates fine. I guess I will just keep it. I still don't understand why the other one won't work. Thanks for all you help. :tazz:
