Hi there,

I keep getting new browsers popping up with unwanted content, also have select words in browser (like date, advise etc) hyperlinked, and folders in favorites keep coming back after deleting.

Have run Xoftspy, Spybot - Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware SE personal, and cleaned up as much as possible. Have also run Spyware Nuker 2005, but have not subscribed to this software so can't remove anything.

1. Download Programs

Please download these programs and save them in a new folder on your desktop -

CleanUp
Ewido Security Suite

Install Ewido, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.


3. Run Hijack This

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

Reboot the PC in Safe Mode (repeatedly tap the F8 key when the PC is starting up).

4. Delete Rogue files

Open Windows Explorer (right click on Start and then click on explore). Locate and delete the following folders and files -

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\GPSTOOL.DLL

Clear out the files in the Prefetch folder. Go to start> run> type into the box Prefetch and delete all the files in that folder. Dont delete the folder, only the files in it !!!!!!!!

Run CleanUp and delete all temp files including temporary internet files.

Run Ewido and do a Full Scan. Save the scan report.

Reboot the PC in Normal Mode.


Run Hijack This and post a fresh HJT log along with Ewido scan report.

Hi Tampabelle,

I followed you instructions, but encountered a couple of problems. I couldn't install Ewido as it only suuports Windows 2000 and above, therefore couldn't run it. I was unable to locate GPSTOOL.DLL, which was in the windows folder earlier today, or Prefetch folder. Everything else went ok.

Hi again,

I've tried running the Panda ActiveScan on the full computer scan twice, but it seems to freeze after scanning around 175000 files, including 5 infected files. The last time it says it was scanning a file I know was from college, but should only have taken a few seconds, (been stuck on this for an hour). I've tried Ctrl-Alt-Del, and that says it is still responding. There is also no way of seeing a report of the infected files so far.

My original problems appear to have been resolved, but not sure of these infected files.

Do you have any suggestions?

sometimes infection lurks if it is not completely removed !!!!

I suggest that you do a complete online scan at one of the other three sites - Kaspersky, BitDefender or Trendmicro. The links are in my signature at the bottom of this post.

Reboot the PC in Normal Mode.

I ran a search for the clientax.dll file, but that came back blank so must assume it's not there. Also ran the Windows Update, so all up to speed there.

Should anything be done to the files that were found to be infected in the online scans?

Computer appears to be running fine apart from it sometimes disconnects from the internet, and then reconnects straight away, I think this might have been happening when running online scans, but not sure.

Sorry, should have been 2 or more windows open, showing different web pages, then the window i'm looking at can change on its own. This doesn't happen all the time, just now and then.
