Hello

i have followed your guide, running adaware, trend micro etc.

Spybot S+D seems unable to remove some spyware insisting on starting up at reboot continuosly.

I have recently tryed playing some internet games like counter strike (half life) and find i have a seriously high ping (like 500) despite having 1)no programs running 2) a one MB broadband connection.

So i've been told it is spyware.

Please could you help me remove spyware. (and possibly any suggestions on why my ping is so high)

I am UKBiker, and I have looked over your log. From what I can see in the log, you have no spyware infections evident, as the log is clean!

With regard to Spybot starting at each boot, i would suggest that you either remove the application from your startups if it is there, or uninstall the application, defragment your HD then reboot and reinstall it. If you choose to delete/reinstall Spybot, then please ensure that you disable its resident protection feature (teatimer) before you uninstall the app.

With regards to the ping times you are experiencing, i would suggest that you post a new question in the section of the board that deals with Internet issues, as on the evidence from your log, it does not seem malware related.This part of the forum can be found through this LINK..

oh and when i said S+D keeps starting at bootup what i meant was this:

i run S+D and it can't remove certain spyware programs so it asks me if it can run at startup. I click yes and the same box comes up again.

So i actually can't seem to get rid of some things.

so theres no problems with spybot at all. I'm asking it to start at startup.

I'm just about to do " fix selected problems"

and then i'll try running it at startup again if they can't be removed

i spose they might be but i don't see whay they should be removed this time and not the other.

I would advise you to uninstall your existing copy of Spybot Before you download the new version, also, when you uninstall your current copy, maje sure that Teatimer is NOT running. Please update Spybot when you have installed the new version then run it. let me know how you get on please.

ok, glad you got that sorted. Tell me, did the new copy of Spybot find and delete those files, or were they not there at all?

Given that you will have to use IE for your windows updates, i would still keep everything enabled as if you were using IE as a default, and by the way, if your XP is not fully up to date with patches, please update it now, it is probably the most important step in surfing safely.

So how do we go about keeping it that way?

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

• AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
• Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
• More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
