For some reason my computer keeps resetting itself, I think I have a virus. I tried doing an online scan using housecall, but my computer resets a few minutes into it. I've also tried running ad-aware, but same thing happens. Any assistance would be much appreciated. :tazz:

Hi IBG

Yes you do some problems and we can certainly help you. First you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.

This may stop your computer rebooting long enough to download and install SP1a.

**When your computer starts up try Start > Run and type shutdown -a into the run box and press enter. It may not work in this case but it sometimes helps for long enough to let you take some actions.

Right click on the taskbar and open Task Manager. Find these running processes and click on end task

windupdates.exe
gglib.exe

Close the task Manager.**

Reboot into Safe Mode as per the instructions here http://www.bleepingc...tutorial61.html

Open Windows Explorer and make sure you can see hidden files, explained here http://www.xtra.co.n...16458,00.html#2

Open HijackThis and check these items. Close all open windows and click on Fix Checked.

Open Windows Explorer and delete

C:\Program Files\winupdate - Delete folder
C:\Windows\system32\ gglib.exe - Delete this file

Reboot into normal mode.

You should now be able to get to the Microsoft update site from the link above so you can download and install the Windows Update you need. Do not download or install SP2. Your machine needs to be clean to install SP2. At this stage you need to install SP1a to stop you being reinfected while we are trying to fix your computer.

When you have installed the Windows update do a fresh HijackThis log and post it into this topic. There will be more to do. Please let us know if you are having trouble doing this. It might be necessary to do this another way. Installing the Windows Update is important to protect you from infections.

I'm getting an error when I try to install the SP1 update, it's telling me to call microsoft's piracy hotline?! I guess I have a pirated copy of XP.

Hi IBG

I'm sorry to find that you have a pirated version of Windows as I realise you may not have been aware that your copy was a pirate version. If you didn't know that your version of Windows was not genuine it would be a good idea to contact the vendor of the software or the Microsoft Piracy Hotline. Microsoft may be able to offer you some advice if you have unknowingly been sold a pirated copy.

It is a policy of this forum that we don't assist users with a pirated version of Windows so I'm sorry but I am unable to help you any further :tazz:

I would encourage you to obtain a genuine version of Windows XP and keep it fully updated. It's in your own best interests as a fully updated version of Windows is far more secure.
