My dad and I been trying to fix this computer but no avail. I still can't get rid of the wallpaper. I know what's wrong with it but the normal way of solving is isn't available for some reason. I know that they're linking my desktop to the net, but when I go to Control Panel -> Display, There's no option for Desktop where I normally set the wallpaper! I've run adaware, PestPatrol, SpywareBlaster, Sysmatec antivirus, and Trojan Remover.
Trojan Remover found a lot of the stuff. Some they delete and quarantine but some they cannot. and new files keep popping up. here's what I get from Trojan Remover:

Hello DeltaD, welcome to Geeks to Go! I’m Kristy and I will be helping you.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

You have a CoolWebSearch infection.

Download CWShredder here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about. Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = res://shdocsv.dll/asst.htm
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows SyncroAd] C:\Program Files\Windows SyncroAd\SyncroAd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WebRebates0] "C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates\WebRebates0.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tmstkaobcrkl] C:\WINDOWS\System32\yogijd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IST Service] C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Internet Optimizer] "C:\Program Files\Internet Optimizer\optimize.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BullsEye Network] C:\Program Files\BullsEye Network\bin\bargains.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [apiha32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\apiha32.exe
O12 - Plugin for .tmi: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\PLUGINS\NPTmiPlay.dll(Do you know what this is? If not, place a check by it as well.)

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following(if found):

Windows SyncroAd
Web_Rebates
Viewpoint
ISTsvc
Internet Optimizer
BullsEye Network

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files/folders in bold (if found):

C:\Program Files\Windows SyncroAd
C:\Program Files\Web_Rebates
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
C:\WINDOWS\System32\yogijd.exe
C:\Program Files\ISTsvc
C:\Program Files\Internet Optimizer
C:\Program Files\BullsEye Network
C:\WINDOWS\apiha32.exe
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\PLUGINS\NPTmiPlay.dll(Only delete this if you do not know what it is)

Empty your recycle bin, and reboot normally.

Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean" checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

And a free trojan scan here:
http://www.moosoft.com/

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. ;)

Sorry I didn't reply quicker, I just finish with summer school last night.
anyway, I did everything and CWS only deleted 2 files and my desktop is still not back.
When I go to Control Panel -> Display and where there should be a "Desktop" tab, there is none, only Screensaver and a Settings tab. I know my desktop is linking to a web page online/offline but where I normally go to disable that, that Desktop is not there... I've already deleted the http page that the desktop was displaying, before it said "Warning your computer is infected with... bla bla bla" now it's just a blank white page.
anyway, I've ran CSW and HJT and here is my HJT log:

Hello DeltaD,

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

everything seems to be running fine. the only problem right now is that I can't restore my desktop. I know that it's link to an HTML page, but the place where I go to disable that function is not there. i.e. Control Panel -> Display -> Desktop tab is not available.
when i put in a different resolutions (a bigger one) I can see a white square (the HTML page located at file://C:\WINDOWS\screen.html)
now i want to restore to the default XP wallpaper and I can't do that.

Hello DeltaD,

Let's try this.

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as AVGoldfix.reg
Set Filetype to All Files and save it somewhere easy to find. We will use it later.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Components\1]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Intel system tool"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\AntivirusGold]

*Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
C:\Windows\System32\hookdump.exe
C:\Windows\System32\winnook.exe
C:\Windows\desktop.html
C:\Windows\screen.html

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt if you get one.
*If the computer does not reboot by itself, do it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Doubleclick the AVGoldfix.reg we made earlier.
And (still in safe mode) use the DiskCleanup Tool to empty all your Temp folders.

Delete the entire folder C:\Program Files\AntiVirusGold

In the Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info"

Then boot back to normal, run HijackThis again and post a new log.

This is what I've been having trouble with:
In the Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info"
When I go to Display, there is no Desktop option. only Screen Saver and Setting.
Here is a screen cap.

I've done HTML before so all this is is a page created by Microsoft in the background on bootup, i'm guessing from that source code. i tried to create another html page and putting it in C:\windows see if that work, but i don't even know where the page is linking to now.

Hello DeltaD,

Copy the and paste the following into notepad and save it as fixtabs.reg

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoActiveDesktopChanges"=hex:00,00,00,00
"NoActiveDesktop"=dword:00000000
"NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000000
"ClassicShell"=dword:00000000
"NoThemesTab"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"NoDispAppearancePage"=dword:00000000
"NoColorChoice"=dword:00000000
"NoSizeChoice"=dword:00000000
"NoDispBackgroundPage"=dword:00000000
"NoDispScrSavPage"=dword:00000000
"NoDispCPL"=dword:00000000
"NoVisualStyleChoice"=dword:00000000
"NoDispSettingsPage"=dword:00000000
"NoDispScrSavPage"=dword:00000000
"NoVisualStyleChoice"=dword:00000000
"NoSizeChoice"=dword:00000000
"SetVisualStyle"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop]
"NoChangingWallPaper"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ThemeManager]
"ThemeActive"="1"
"DllName"=hex(2):25,00,53,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,52,00,6f,00,6f,00,\
  74,00,25,00,5c,00,72,00,65,00,73,00,6f,00,75,00,72,00,63,00,65,00,73,00,5c,\
  00,54,00,68,00,65,00,6d,00,65,00,73,00,5c,00,6c,00,75,00,6e,00,61,00,5c,00,\
  6c,00,75,00,6e,00,61,00,2e,00,6d,00,73,00,73,00,74,00,79,00,6c,00,65,00,73,\
  00,00,00

Doubleclick the file and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.

After, boot into safemode.

Be sure you are able to view hidden files, and delete the following if found:

C:\WINDOWS\screen.html

Empty your recycle bin and reboot normally.

Let me know if that makes a difference.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!
the page still boot up as normal (with the white wallpaper), but I did my little trick and fixed the problem. The desktop tab came back and i was able to delete the stupid "Security V3" HTML page that was causing the problem.
Everything is back to normal and everyone's happy, especially ME!!!
Thank a BILLION KRISTY!!!

OK, now to prevent future desktop hijack, is there a way to DISABLE the Web linking feature on the desktop??
