Hi, first time in the forums here. I keep getting pop ups and I have ranned everything. Trend Micro for a start now and again pop ups with troj_buddy or troj_svercis or something like that. It says quarantined but i dont know why it keeps popping up. It use to be troj_vundo which would never stop popping so I had to close trend micro... I also ranned S&D, Adaware, spysweeper, spyblaster etc.

One annoying one that I noticed is random name.exe. I keep closing it and it comes back straight away with a different name. I tried to stop it from running on startup through msconfig but it still runs at start with a different name. Tried locating the file and its not in the folder.

Heres my hijackthis log file:

Lets start off by downloading a few necessary programs.

Download and Unzip Process Explorer Here
Scroll to the bottom of the page and select your Operating System.
Unzip it to its own folder on the desktop so you can find it later.
Download and install Advanced Process Manipulation Here

Then copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it directly to the rootdirectory as vundoh.reg
Set Filetype to "All files" (the file should now be here: C:\vundoh.reg)

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\logsys]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{429E4B60-3CEC-43C3-A53B-501C25F7F5FD}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{44240BB5-BD7D-4D49-A1AA-8AB0F3D3CB44}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{B8B55274-0F9A-41E5-9067-A3539BD9E860}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{429E4B60-3CEC-43C3-A53B-501C25F7F5FD}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{44240BB5-BD7D-4D49-A1AA-8AB0F3D3CB44}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{B8B55274-0F9A-41E5-9067-A3539BD9E860}]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSEvents.MSEvents.1]

[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSEvents.MSEvents]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{429E4B60-3CEC-43C3-A53B-501C25F7F5FD}]
"Compatibility Flags"=dword:00000400

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{44240BB5-BD7D-4D49-A1AA-8AB0F3D3CB44}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\ActiveX Compatibility\{B8B55274-0F9A-41E5-9067-A3539BD9E860}]
"Compatibility Flags"=dword:00000400

Now reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Open Process Explorer.
  • Scroll down in the main window and find winlogon.exe
  • Right click on winlogon.exe and select Suspend
  • Leave Process Explorer open.
Now run HijackThis and put checkmarks in front of these two lines

O1 - Hosts: 0.0.1 localhost

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {429E4B60-3CEC-43C3-A53B-501C25F7F5FD} - C:\WINDOWS\Help\logsys.dll

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A3FDD654-A057-4971-9844-4ED8E67DBBB8} - (no file)

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {62999427-33FC-4baf-9C9C-BCE6BD127F08} - (no file)

O20 - Winlogon Notify: logsys - C:\WINDOWS\Help\logsys.dll

Do NOT fix them yet

Now open Advanced Process Manipulation.
  • Scroll down in the main window and find c:\windows\explorer.exe
  • Click on the entry and that will display a list of files in the second window.
  • Scroll down the list in the second window and find C:\WINDOWS\Help\logsys.dll
  • Right click on that entry and select Unload DLL
  • You will now lose your Start Bar and Desktop Icons. This is normal.
  • Leave Advanced Process Manipulation open
Go back to Process Explorer window.
  • Click File > Run
  • In the run box type regedit.exe /s C:\vundoh.reg
Back in Advanced Process Manipulation.
  • Scroll down in the main window and find c:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe
  • Click on the entry and that will display a list of files in the second window.
  • Scroll down the list in the second window and find C:\WINDOWS\Help\logsys.dll
  • Right click on that entry and select Unload DLL
  • You will have to click OK about six times
In HijackThis click Fix checked. You will be prompted you are about to remove a BHO. That's what you want.

Now back in Process Explorer.
  • Find winlogon.exe again.
  • Right click on winlogon.exe and select Resume
  • This should reboot your computer automatically.
After the reboot copy the code below into notepad and save it as findtheother.bat

echo ** This batch was originally written by OSC **
cd C:\WINDOWS\inf
if exist C:\contents.txt del C:\contents.txt
echo ************************************>> C:\contents.txt
echo **These are the hidden files found**>> C:\contents.txt
echo ************************************>> C:\contents.txt
dir /a:h >> c:\contents.txt
echo ************************************>> C:\contents.txt
echo **These are the system files found**>> C:\contents.txt
echo ************************************>> C:\contents.txt
dir /a:s >> C:\contents.txt
attrib /d /s -s -r -h -a
start notepad c:\contents.txt
exit

Then doubleclick that file and when it is done it will open a text file showing all hidden and system files in that folder. Post the contents of that file in a reply to this thread.

There will be more to do since you also have the epolvy trojan.

Hmm I made a mistake in te findother.bat, but it should have worked anyway.

Maybe something interfering.

Run Process Explorer and find this Process in the list of Processes:
c:\windows\system32\micwwbp.exe
Select the process and click Process > Suspend.

Then in HijackThis click Config > Misc Tools > Delete a file on reboot...
In the explorer Window select the file c:\windows\system32\micwwbp.exe
When prompted if you want to reboot click YES
Leave Process explorer running with the process suspended.

After the reboot check the following items in HijackThis.
Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ljlubd] c:\windows\system32\micwwbp.exe r

Reboot back to normal and post a new HijackThis log.

Thats the random name file, it just comes back with a different name. I open task manager and see the file, go to system32 folder and try to delete it but I cant cos its running. I close the process and the icon in system32 also dissapear and then it comes back with a different name. Deleted through hijackthis reboot and its comeback as svuzwhn.exe now. Its annoying as [bleep].

Well. If you know how to find it why don't you use the method I gave you on it.

It changes name when you end the process (consequently also on reboot)

That is why we use the Suspend option in Process Explorer.

I already tried it, it wont allow me to delete it even when suspended. I just get a message saying "this is being used by another person or program etc". I can fix it through Hijackthis but it just returns as another name.

Download APT from http://www.diamondcs...ex.php?page=apt

Run the program and select the process
Use the Kill3 button

Then see if you can delete the file

Can you send me a copy of that miracle file?
I want to compare it to the samples I have.

Preferably zipped to pieterATwilderssecurity.org (replace AT with @)

Here is another method that should work:

Open your C:\Windows\System32-folder and locate bad process
Don't delete it yet, because you can't for the moment.
Leave your system32-folder open with the view on that bad file.

Now, doubleclick on procexp.exe

You'll see all the running processes there.
Search for bad process
Doubleclick on bad process

A new window will open.
You'll see several tabs on top.
Make sure the Threads is selected.
(normally that one will open by default)
You'll see two instances of that bad process in there.
Select the first one and click Kill
Answer YES at the prompt.

Now delete bad process in your system32-folder.

I sent the file to the email above. I managed to delete it using the method above but it seems after a few hours I have it again.

I'll install it on my testbox later today.

In the meantime can you install RegProt:
http://www.diamondcs...hp?page=regprot

When you first install it it will prompt you about keys that are already present.
Read them carefully before deciding. There is no rush, take your time.

Remove the infection again and use RegProt to prevent it from reinfecting you.
