I've installed and run CleanUp!, Ad-Aware SE Personal, Spybot - Search and Destroy, CWShredder, and ewido as suggested in the "click here before posting a HiJackThis log". I think everything is working pretty well now, ewido finally got rid of my original problem which was an annoying program that put an extra search bar in my internet explorer. I was hoping someone could look over my log for me as well. Before I post that though I want to thank you guys for putting together a great collection of resources with the "click here before posting a HiJackThis log" tutorial. Also, thanks for suggestions you have for my HiJackThis log.

Hi There jligutti.

you did a good job of getting clean by yourself :tazz: ;) ;) , there are just a few things left that we need to attend to

Please print this out so that you can refer to it as the fix progresses

Lets get started then

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

Need2Find

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us4nb.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-us4nb.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://srch-us4nb.hpwis.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://srch-us4nb.hpwis.com/
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://srch-us4nb.hpwis.com/
O2 - BHO: Need2Find Bar BHO - {4D1C4E81-A32A-416b-BCDB-33B3EF3617D3} - C:\Program Files\Need2Find\bar\1.bin\ND2FNBAR.DLL (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\Program Files\Need2Find

After that, Reboot.

Please rescan using HJT and post your new log here so we can see whether your system is now clean.

Good Luck

I Followed your directions and the new log is posted below. There was and still is an entry in the add/remove programs for Need2Find, but when I try to remove is gives the error "Error loading C:\Progr~\Need2F~1\bar\1.bin\Nd2fnBar.dll The specified module could not be found". While in safemode I did delete the C:\Program Files\Need2Find directory.

As for other things in the add/remove programs i removed a lot of games and other junk that came on the computer when I bought it. I recognize most applications but there are a few I don't know about. These are,

LiveReg (symantec corporation) - Used rarely, last used 11/6/02
LiveUpdate 1.80 (symantec Corporation) - Used rarely, last used 11/13/02
Odyssey Client - Used rarely, no last used date
setup (remove only) - Used rarely, last used on 3/10/03
Shockwave - Used rarely, last used 6/4/03

Thanks for your help with this UK.

- JOE

Hi There Jligutti :help:

Great job, your log is clean. :tazz: ;) ;)

The additional programmes that you listed are all legit so no need to do anything there.

Just a little bit of housecleaning to do now and thats it

Now you have to clean out your temporary files:
  • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Click "OK" to remove them.
  • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
Now that you are all cleaned up, how can we keep it that way?

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and Spyware Aid's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

Great Job :help:
