My computer's CD-ROM drives (both of them) cannot be read. It's a window 98 computer and I can't use windowsupdate.com because it does not recognize my computer as windows. What can I do to fix this?

(1) Make sure the connectors are in place and working.
(2) You may have lost some chipset drivers. the ones related to detecting cd drives. You may be able to download them from the motherboard or chipset mfr..
