i apologize for what is probably a very dumb question: how do i tell if i have a sound card in my laptop? i would know if it was my laptop but it is a friend's. i have a toshiba satellite laptop and there are ports for a microphone and headphones, but when plug in my headphones, nothing happens and the sound still comes out of the laptop speakers. when i look in the device manager but i don't see anything that says "sound card". does this mean that i don't have one?

What satellite model? iv worked on a few before. In the device manager, sound cards are listed in Sound, video and game controllers. In system information, look in >components>sound device.

If your sound drivers are missing check on here >> http://www.csd.toshi.../su_sc_home.jsp

have you got any problem devices?
What about the model of your sattellite? it should have a serial number written on a sticker stuck on the bottom side of your machine.
