Hey, I was wondering if someone could look at this logfile. My computer has recently been very slow in responding to anything. I have ran spyware and adware scans and the results have not shown anything. Thanks for the help.

Hi thefyu and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. If you haven't logged in go to Geeks to Go and do so. Then proceed to item a.

If you already have logged in, go directly to item a.

a. Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window.
b. In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
c. If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there

2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

4. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

A. Close ALL windows except HJT

B. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')

C. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

NOTE: Your system is infected with a worm.

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Regards,

Trevuren

1. 1. I want you to UNINSTALL the following programs through the ADD/REMOVE feature of your Control Panel:

viewpoint
Wild Tangent CDA

2. Now, using Windows Explorer, I need you to DELETE the following folder(s) and all their content:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
C:\Program Files\WildTangent CDA

3. REBOOT your system.

4. I want you to download and run a free trial version of an anti-trojan program called Trojan Hunter: Trojan Hunter . Let it scan your whole system and remove anything it finds.

5. REBOOT
your system.

6. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

1. Please go to Start -> Run -> type cmd and press Enter.

2. At the command prompt type sfc /scannow, making sure to put a space between the "c" and the slash, and then press Enter. This will run the System File Checker.

3. Follow the prompts, and insert your Windows installation CD if requested.

4. Then please REBOOT your computer.

Dear Trevuren,

The problem is I cannot even start my computer. Before anything even gets loaded up, my computer spends about 20 minutes trying to load windows and the only message I receive is Windows cannot be started because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows root>\system 32\ntoskrnl.exe. It says I have to reinstall this program. I am, however, temporarily in another city away from home so I do not have my reboot CDs for my Vaio. I was also wondering, if I do repair my windows, will everything be wiped away?

Is there another way I can run my computer without it going through Windows? If so, what should I press upon startup?

Thanks for all your help. I really hope I can resolve this sometime soon since I am in dire need of my computer.

You do need your CD for both options.

1. If you do a repair, everything won't be erased.

2. If you do a reformat and new install, you will lose everything.

Hey Trevuren,

After trying to fix my windows xp problem, I have been able to temporarily do what you have instructed me to do with the "wildtangent" and "viewpoint" files. I have also run the trojanhunter program and deleted one thing. Below is my new HijackThis Log.

I also had another question about my windows xp problem. As of now, even after repairing windows, I can only run windows when the windows cd is in the cd-rom. I have asked around and no one seems to know why this occurs.

Thanks again.

I suggest that you consult with one of our other forums on this issue as it is not directly malware related in my opinion. I do not have the expertise to handle your need.

The forum can be found HERE

When you are finished with them, it shouldn't take them long, come back and I'll review your log before starting final cleaning procedures.

Regards,

Trevuren

Dear Trevuren,

I just wanted to give you an update on my situation. After consulting with the other forums on my Windows XP Pro problem, my hard drive eventually crashed. I have just sent in my computer to Sony for a repair so the computer is out of action for a good 2 weeks. Just wanted to let you know and thanks for all your input.

There is something I noticed, however. While I was browsing through my files one last time to transfer data before letting it get wiped clean by Sony, I noticed that the program Viewpoint is connected to AOL Instant Messenger. I remember you told me to delete this file. If I do use AIM in the future, is it still safe to delete Viewpoint and have AIM work properly? Or is Viewpoint really harmful and I should use another program like Trillian?

Thanks again,
thefyu.

Sorry to hear that your machine had to go into the shop.

Viewpoint is just a huge resource hog. There is no malware attached.

Here is an article about another optional service that is ALWAYS running on your system that you may want to disable and thus free up system resources.  Viewpoint Manager

Its removal would not be the cause of your system crashing.
