Dear Gotmulk54, :tazz:

Note: Gotmulk54, was helped out by rambro in the #geekstogo chat room. I am just writing down formal instructions in this thread, that I explained to Gotmulk54 in the chat room. Hopefully this instructions will clarify some things mentioned to Gotmulkt54 in the chat room.

Welcome to the Geeks to Go forums.

We are currently studying your log.

You are currently running HijackThis from your desktop. Since HijackThis makes backups of any entries you fix, you should create a folder just to hold the HijackThis program and its backups, so the backups and the program are not accidentally deleted. Go to "My Computer", click on c:\ and then go to the "File" menu, choose New -> Folder. Name the folder "HJT" or "HijackThis" and then please move the "HijackThis.exe" executable there.

Restart your computer and post a new HijackThis log. ;)

Dear Gotmulk54, :tazz:

Some of the steps presented here were discussed in the geektogo chat room. Gotmulk54, go through these procedures again as a double check.

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
******************************

Dear Gotmulk54, I notice that you are using more than one antivirus program. This is very dangerous, as multiple AVs can interfere with one another and actually allow MORE viruses to get through. I strongly suggest you either (1) configure only one antivirus program to enable automatic realtime scanning, and leave the rest disabled most of the time, or (2) go to Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all but one antivirus program.

In your case, Gotmulk54, you are running AVG antivirus and Norton antivirus. It one of the subscriptions to these antiviruses has expired, then delete the antivirus, whose subscription has expired, if that is the case.
******************************

Please download and run a Free Trial of Trojan Hunter at http://www.misec.net...rojanHunter.exe. Please restart your computer.

Dear Gotmulk54, run the Housecall scan and Panda scan with your "Internet Explorer Browser".

Please run the Housecall online virus scan located at: http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp. Follow the prompts to scan your hard drive for viruses. Select the "Autoclean" option so that Housecall will remove any viruses from your system. When the scan is finished, please restart your computer.

Then please run the Panda scan here: http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm. Delete any viruses found, and restart your computer.
*******************************

Please download and run Ad-aware SE. Here is a link to download Ad-aware SE.
Here is a link on How to use Ad-aware SE.

Please reboot your computer.
***************************

Click Start then Control Panel then Add and Remove Programs. Look for the following installed program/programs and if they are listed click on each one and then click on the Remove or Change button and if asked select "Yes" or "Ok" to remove:

Gator (See the following link for further removal instructions: http://www.pchell.co...ort/gator.shtml )

Optional programs you can uninstall, through the Add/Remove program:

NewDotNet is an ad supported software. The application is running silently in the background as a browser helper object (BHO). It pops up ad windows while you are surfing the web and periodically connects to the remote server to check for available updates.

new.net was originally designed to shorten web addresses. They created some new virtual top level domains like .mp3, .xxx, .travel which can only be visited on computers with the new.net addons installed.

The software is mostly bundled with other software products like file sharing tools or other ad supported freeware tools.

NewDotNet is a browser hijacker and can update itself without any input from you. Anything that modifies your windows HOSTS file is a hijacker and we don't want it! The "purpose" of this is to add support for additional domains like .AGENT .INC .LOVE .SHOP .SPORT. We suggest you remove this.

Here are instructions to remove NewDotNet: http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html

Here are other links that provide removal instructions for NewDotNet:

http://www.antisourc...e.php/newdotnet
http://www.pchell.co...t/savenow.shtml
http://www.bleepingc...tNet-t3095.html
************************

MyWebSearch - also not techically malware, but it comes bundled with it, and there are better alternatives, such as the google toolbar.

Uninstall the following program/programs through Add/Remove programs:

MyWebSearch or My Search Bar or MyWay Speed Bar or My Web Search Bar
Fun Web Products Easy Installer

See the following link for more information: http://www.pchell.co...eycentral.shtml.
*************************

IncrediMail is an e-mail application that allows you to customize the feel and look of your e-mails. This application basically causes problems on some computers.

Go to the following link location: http://www.answersth.../tasklist_i.htm, and do a search on that web page for "IMApp.exe", once found, their is a excerpt that describes the pitfalls related with "IncrediMail".

Uninstall the following program/programs through Add/Remove programs:

IncrediMail
*************************

Dear Gotmulk54, the following optional removals, involve peer-to-peer file sharing networks. The reason why I am concerned about these programs, is that they can download, spyware and other viruses on your computer, even if the application itself is spyware/virus free. I was talking to another member of geeks to go and this person recommended two alternative file sharing programs. Here are the two alternatives:

1) emule ( http://www.emule-pro...general.cgi?l=1 )
2) winmx ( http://www.winmx.com/ )

**********************

LimeWire is a Peer to Peer (P2P) file-sharing client. Note - as with all P2P sharing programs they are susceptible to various forms of malware". That is LimeWire is a program that can be used as a vehicle for downloading spyware on to your computer system.

Uninstall the following program/programs through Add/Remove programs:

LimeWire and/or LimeShop
**************************

Ares is "a Windows program that enables peer-to-peer file-sharing on the Ares P2P network. As a member of the P2P community you can search and download any file shared by other users. You can meet new friends in Ares chatrooms while you download". See the following link: http://www.aresgalax...g/download.html.

However, as with other peer-to-peer file-sharing applications, these applications may be used as a vehicle to download spyware, adware, trojans, worms and other viruses. See the following link: http://www.aresgalaxy.org/p2prisks.htm.

Uninstall the following program/programs through Add/Remove programs:

Ares

Restart your computer.
**************************

Run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries (if they exist):

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" button to finish the repair. Close the HijackThis application.

Please reboot your computer into Safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu). For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site: http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

Dear Gotmulk54, :tazz:

You are probably accessing the geeks to go chat room through their java applet. Go the following link: http://www.mirc.com/, to down load a "Desktop IRC Client" program. Then run the program, and connect to the follwing server: irc.wyldryde.org and then join the following channel: #geekstogo. This should bring you into the Geeks To Go Chat Room.

For more detailed instructions do the following:1) Download the mirc desktop client.
2) Open up the mirc desktop client.
3) Click on File -> Select Server
4) An Mirc Options dialogue box should open.
5) Press on the "Add button", an Add Server dialogue box should open.
6) In The Add Server dialog box, fill in the following text fields, for example:A) Description: Geeks To Go Chat Room
B) IRC Server: irc.wyldryde.org
C) Port(s): 6667
7) Press the Add button in the Add Server dialogue box.
8) Press the OK button in the Mirc Options dialogue box.
9) In the mirc desktop application click on Commands -> Join Channel
10) An Input Request dialogue box should open.
11) In the "Enter Channel name text field", type in the following:A) #geekstogo
12) Click the OK button in the Input Request dialogue box.
13) This should bring you into the Geeks To Go Chat Room.

Dear Gotmulk54, :tazz:

Note: The following information relates to the removal of IncrediMail, in order to remove IncrediMail, you will have to work with your "registry". BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN WORKING WITH YOUR COMPUTER'S REGISTRY, IF ANY MISTAKES ARE MADE IN THE REGISTRY IT COULD MESS UP YOUR COMPUTER. Since you will be working with your computer's registry I want to give you instructions on how to back up your registry in case any mistakes are made. With the registry backup, you can correct any mistakes made by double clicking on the backup registry file and saying "yes" to merge with the current registry.

Back up your current registry

1) Click on the Start button.

2) From the menu that appears, choose Run.

3) In the window that appears, there is a text area labeled Open. In that area, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks").

4) Click the OK button (or hit the Enter or Return key on your keyboard).

5) The Registry Editor window should open.

6) If My Computer is not highlighted, click on it once so that it is highlighted.

7) On the menu bar, click on Registry and then click on Export Registry File.

8) The Export Registry File window will appear. In the Save In drop-down box at the top, choose Desktop.

9) In the File Name box at the bottom, type "backup" (without the quotation marks), then click the Save button.

10) A backup copy of the entire registry will now be saved to your desktop in case something goes wrong.

Notes:

* To restore the registry from the backup file you made, follow the same steps as above, but in step 2 choose Import Registry File instead of Export Registry File. Or, alternatively, you could double-click on the backup file on the desktop and answer Yes when it asks if you want to import the information into the registry.
* Once you've made changes to the registry and you are sure that you no longer need the backup file you made, simply delete it from the desktop.

See the following link: http://helpdesk.umd....ndows_2000/555/. Pay attention to the following sections: Starting the Registry Editor and Backing Up the Registry.
***************************************************

The next link describes how to export your e-mail from IncrediMail to another e-mail account, for example, Outlook Express.

http://www.prcc.asn....Dec2004-15.html

This next link describes how to manually remove Incredimail, via you registry editor.

http://www.datadocto...on.cfm?id=17290

Restart your computer and then please post a new HijackThis log.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps.

Good luck and be careful using the registry editor! ;)

Dear Gotmulk54, :tazz:

Go the following link location: http://www.billsway.com/vbspage/

Scroll down the page and download the "Registry Search Tool"

Unzip RegSrch.zip to the desktop, and double click on RegSrch.vbs

If you get a warning from your Anti Virus please ignore it and allow this to run.

When it starts, you will be prompted to enter a search phrase.

Enter Incredimail into the Search Box and click the "OK" button.

It will search your registry for the keyword and then pop-up the results in a text file.

Post the text file here in your next reply to this post. ;)

Dear Gotmulk54, :tazz:

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
******************************

Dear Gotmulk54, I want you to download and run a couple more applications to scan your computer for possible bad files, that might not be picked up with the HijackThis application.

Please download the free MWAV antivirus tool from here: ftp://ftp.microworldsystems.com/download/tools/mwav.exe. Save it to the desktop and run it. Follow the prompts to scan your system for viruses. Then please post for me the log of infected files from the BOTTOM panel of the scan window in a reply to this post.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here: http://www.ewido.net/en/download/. Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please reboot your computer into Safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu). For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site: http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

Run a full scan with the ewido application and remove anything it finds. This application should also produce a log, please post this log in a reply to this post.

Please restart your computer, in Normal Mode, then post a new HijackThis log, along with the log from the MWAV antivirus tool application. Please also post the log from the Ewido scan.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps.
