I decided to join simply because you seemed like the kind of bunch that could help me out with my problem... I am not at all experienced in troubleshooting connectivity issues so any help from all of you is desperately needed!
On June 27 my Internet connection simply stopped working. Firefox said that no page could be found and IE6 that no page could be displayed. The only thing I knew how to do was to check the Internet options (which according to my provider should be configured to detecting the settings automatically). I also secured all connectors from power source to my cable modem to computer. Rebooted. Nothing.
I then went on checking for any kind of malware. My AV is Panda Platinum and I keep it up to date. I also have the ZoneAlarm firewall and a collection of spy/adware removers like Lavasoft AdAware, Spybot S&D and I also downloaded and ran Ewido, CWShredder and did Trend Housecall online scan. I seem to be clean.
Now, my provider uses DHCP. When I went to view my connection under control panel I saw that I had been assigned an IP starting with 169.254.... and my subnet mask was 255.255.0.0. Even I know this is not good!
Next, I went to command prompt and typed ipconfig/release and then renew, but I received an error message saying that it was not possible to contact my DHCP server (sorry can't have the exact wording as my Win is in French ) and that the operation had timed out. Okay. Not nice.
I then went to check out my services to see if the DHCP cliet was running - it was.
I went looking around a bit and came across a tool called WinsockXp Fix which I also ran and then rebooted, but I am still stuck with no connection.
Now, the fun part is that if I do a system restore to a time on June 27 before I lost my connection, I can get my Internet back! Everything works like a dream! The bad part is that every time I shut down my PC and reboot, the connection is gone again and I'm back to the DHCP dump.
So, it seems like something went either wrong or missing somewhere on my PC without me knowing it. I don't know anymore where to look. I am desperate for help. I was already considering a reinstall which would doubtless solve the problem but I would also like to get to the bottom of this. Any help would be priceless for me!
Thanks in advance,
Irina
