Hello everyone

I had always managed to keep a reasonably clean PC by using Kerio firewall and regularly running AdAware and CWShredder (and... yes... by clinging to 98SE :tazz: )
But this was when I had Internet connection through a simple DSL USB modem...
Somehow, since I use a modem/router to share connection between 2 PCs, I am sort of invaded, but maybe it's just coincidental with an increase of malware these last months ??
In any case I am completely new to HiJack logs, so I would highly appreciate the advice of a pro. Thanks a lot ! Here is the thing :

Hello Streamsz, welcome to Geeks to Go! I’m Kristy and I will be helping you.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

You have a CoolWebSearch infection.

Download CWShredder here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder

Do you know what this site is: http://www.ulg.ac.be? Let me know.

Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.evidence-....shtml?A661845/ (Do you know this site? If you do you can keep it there)

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).

Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files/folders in bold (if found):

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\qfxfu.dll

Empty your recycle bin.

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about. Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean" checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

And a free trojan scan here:
http://www.moosoft.com/

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. ;)

Hello Kristy and thanks for your help.
I followed your instructions and made the fixes you suggested in HJT.
By the way, www.ulg.ac.be is the home page of the University where I worked
and should be considered a safe website.
I also ran CWShredder 2.15 in safe mode but it found nothing.

However, I still have that same problem : my Internet connection is broken
as soon as a download is starting, or some heavier traffic is involved. For that
reason, I am also unable to run the online virus and trojan scans that you indicated to me... the scan stops after a few seconds :tazz:
Once the connection is broken, I can only reboot to get it again, and most of the time I have to reboot manually (with the switch) because Windows is stuck at the "shutdown flag" screen.
Can you tell me what is happening ?
Thank you, here is the latest HJT log :

I have a DSL connection. It is shared between 2 PC's by the use of a Topcom Wireless Webracer 1154G+ modem/router, but the PC I have problems with is connected to the router through a Ethernet cable, the other one uses wireless.
nota : I use Kerio Personal Firewall and it looks like I can download a little more when I shut it down, but the connection eventually breaks down anyhow...

Thanks for your help again

Hello streamsz,

It could be a problem with your ethernet card. Do you happen to have a second ethernet card that you can try on your computer to see if that one will work?

Unfortunately I don't have a second card to try, but if this one was out, would I have any connection at all ?

That's not really my field. So I'm not sure about the answer. If it is the ethernet card, it isn't completely out yet since you still have a connection, but it could be going out. I will ask some of my fellow staff members when I get the chance. As you pointed out, there is quite a time difference between us, as it is 2:18am over here. I will get back to you later on today.

Ok Kristy and THANKS A LOT really :tazz:

Did you note my remark a few posts above about the possible interference of Kerio firewall ?
I just noticed that Eudora, which is still working fine apart from that, is now unable to send a message if there is an attached file to it, except when I shut down Kerio.
Do you think I should completely re-install and reconfigure Kerio firewall ?

Talk to you later

Also, this downloading problem started just exactly when I got rid of Smitfraud.c trojan...
Is it possible that it would be coincidental ?
I think I read somewhere that some trojans can affect your connection, even after their elimination.

I would gladly hear your opinion about it.
Thanks
D.

Hello Kristy,

I see you are online now.
Did you have the opportunity to submit my case to one of your fellow staff members ?
