I have a Sony VAIO and recently developed the bloodhound.w32.ep virus and was not able to use IE. On a different computer I downloaded the WinsockXPFix as your website suggested and then loaded it on mine and now my internet is working again. I went down the list of (Do you suspect a malware (Spyware, Virus, Trojan) infection? Please start here.) section of your site and each scan found stuff and fixed it but the computer is still not working properly. The backround has changed and Norton is detecting W32.Desktophijack currently (it used to say bloodhound.w32.ep). I cannot boot up in safe mode (it starts to load and then just freezes. Below is the HijackThis log. Any advise you can offer is very much appreciated.

Hi Excal,

Thank you so much for responding and unfortunately I still need help. Below is the log and I also thought you should know that I tried to do the upgrade to SP1a but when I go the the windows site the only upgrade that comes up is for SP2 and on the "start here" page it said not to install SP2 prior to removing all malware. Thank you again

trubrecht

Hi trubrecht and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you.

I can see that you have some malware issues. This maybe a few step process in removing it. I encourage you to stick with it and follow my directions as closely as possible so as to avoid complicating the problem further.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Download and install CleanUp! Here*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
We will use this program later.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
ewido manual updates
Close Ewido, we will use this later.

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

Hi Excal,

Before I start the fix I wanted to let you know that I am not able to boot up in safe mode. I can choose it after pressing F8 and it begins to load but then freezes. Should I go ahead with the fix in normal mode?

Copy everything in the code box below and paste it into notepad. Go up to "File > Save As..." and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as wininet.bat on your desktop.

dir %Systemdrive%\wininet.dll /a h /s > files.txt
start notepad files.txt

Double click wininet.bat and when it is ready it will open files.txt
Copy the content of files.txt and paste it here.

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

hi trubrecht,

Start>mycomputer>Local disc C: then click on the WINDOWS folder, then on the system32 folder.

find wininet.dll and right click in it. COPY then paste to your desktop.

Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Post the results of the scan.

I am not able to copy the file. The following message comes up:

Cannot copy wininet: Acess is denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

Do you know how I can unprotect it?

Go to this folder:

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\833ef6e935eca488f438dbe2c5b37e03\rtmgdr

if there is a wininet.dll in there, see if u can right click and copy it to your desktop.

please post and let me know the results.

Thanks,
