Now comes the tricky part. Make sure you follow these instructions to a T. Do not deviate from them at all, if you do, bad things may happen. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them before you start the fix

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Please go to start>my computer then navigate to this file:

C:\Windows\System32\wininet.dll

right click on it and rename it to wininet.old

go to your C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\833ef6e935eca488f438dbe2c5b37e03\rtmgdr-folder, rightclick on the wininet.dll present there, choose copy and paste it in your system32-folder. (if for some reason its not there, u can get the one your put on your desktop)

Reboot

Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\Windows\System32\wininet.old
C:\Windows\System32\oleadm.dll

Hi Excal,

Sorry I have not been able to post anything recently. My internet was not working but I am up and running again.

I tried the instructions but when I try to rename the file I get the following message:

Cannot rename wininet: Acess is denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

According to Norton, this is the file that is infected with a virus.

Thank you for all of your help so far. Let me know what to do next.

C:\Windows\System32\oleadm.dll

Right click and rename to oleadm.old


reboot


then see if you can rename wininet.dll now.
(if you can do not reboot or shut off computer)

that file does not exist on my computer, or at least i cannot find it even by searching the entire computer. could i have deleted it before?

Go ahead and do this - we're going to see if we can use command prompt to rename and replace the infected file.

please copy these instructions and paste them into notepad for use while in safe mode

Please reboot your computer into safe mode.

Once in Safe Mode, go to Start > Run type:

cmd

Click OK.

Please copy the following line and paste it into the black window:

CD C:\Windows\system32

Hit enter.

It will go to the next line, then copy this line and paste it in:

rename wininet.dll wininet.old

Hit enter.

Copy this line and paste it in:

CD C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\833ef6e935eca488f438dbe2c5b37e03\rtmgdr

Hit enter.

Copy this line and paste it in:

copy wininet.dll C:\windows\system32

Hit enter.

Finally, type exit and hit enter.

Then please go into your C:\Windows\system32 directory and make sure there is a wininet.old and a wininet.dll BOTH in there. Please let me know if you run into any problems. You MUST make sure there is a wininet.dll in the system32 directory before you reboot otherwise you will run into serious issues.

Reboot your computer.

Hi Excal,

I was able to delete the old file and when I ran Norton no virus was found!!!! How good is that? I am posting a Hijack log just in case anything is hanging around. I also ran Panda Activescan, Ewido, Ad-Aware and Spybot. I posted the Activescan and Ewido reports below the Hijack Log but Ad-Aware and Spybot found nothing. My computer is so much better. Thank you so much for all of your help.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as fixme.reg (make sure that Save as Type is set at "All Files") on your Desktop. Ensure there is no space at above REGEDIT 4.

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware


If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir


The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:
(do not have more than one firewall running on your system)

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Included in those updates is Windows XP Service Pack 2. Click Here
Since you're junkware free, the time to get it is NOW. Service Pack 2 is a MAJOR upgrade for XP. It adds numerous security and software patches, as well as new features and functionality. You will also be adding another layer of protection against future threats.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot
