OK I stupidly downloaded an exe file promising a funky new 3d free screen saver this morning. Then all [bleep] broke lose! Endless popups and auto installations of anti spyware etc.. Whenever I click on anything, it is always followed about 10 seconds later buy a dialog box saying "Windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.." The only way to then progress with any other app also running (like explorer for instance) is to kill the second instance of 'drwtsn.exe' in task manager. It has almost crippled my laptop. I am running XP Home sp2.

I diligently spent all day running through the steps you describe to RUPPER in his similar "Can not get rid of antivirus gold" posting. However it has made no difference, still got that nasty white exlcamation mark in the red circle icon in the systray, still get random http pop ups and still get the windows explorer dialog box on every click..

Lets start with the AVGold Fix.

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.


Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.


Run Ewido:

• Click on scanner
• Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
• When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
• When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Hello Jamiemac,

You have a CoolWebSearch infection.

Download CWShredder here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder


Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about. Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Then post a new HiJacKThis log.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\hookdump.exe

After that, Reboot.

Then post a new HiJackThis log for me to look at

Select Properties
Select the Desktop Tab
Select the Customize Desktop button
Select the Web Tab
Tell me what is listed there, and if anything is checked.

Good Morning (well its morning for me anyways )

Thats due to the desktop hijack that you must still have.

Boot into safe mode.


Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.


Then see if you have your display tabs back!

OK so I ran smitrep in (administrator) safe mode (with networking). It did its thing although I did notice messages about not being able access certain files?

On returning to User mode, I find I still can not see the desktop tab in display properties so my desktop still has the 'Active desktop recoveyr message'. Stranger still on logging in to USer mode I was greeted with the following message which I had to close:

Please follow the instructions provided, you may want to print out these instructions and use them as a reference.

First:
Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.

• Install ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Then click on Start Update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
• When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop.

Now close ewido security suite.
