I got this error message when I was restarting and Windows wouldnt start up a few days ago. I got it to load in Safe Mode & then did a System Restore.

I did a Search and it came up with LSASS and a LSASS (3) , both in the the System32 folder, which is where its supposed to be. I went online and found its supposed to be there for Windows to start up (I have XP) and they mentioned if its in other folders, its probably a virus.

Just to be on the safe side, I did a virus scan and nothing came up.

Tonight my Internet kept messing up (I have a cable modem, so it kept disconnecting and reconnecting over and over), like it did the other night, and I tried restarting and got the same error message, and had to do another System Restore (I did it back to an earlier date this time).

I just reformatted my computer not to long ago (Think the first day of the semester!), and I really don't have the time or effort to do this in the middle of the semester of college.

Do you think I should be asking for a laptop this Christmas or is there something I can do to fix it?

You have the sasser worm. Do not reformat yet. I will give you some instructions. When you follow through with them you need to be disconnected from the internet in order for it work.

lsass.exe - Local Security Authority Service DO NOT DELETE THIS FILE

Generates process that is responsible for authenticating users for
winlogon service.

Sasser worm Removal

Start,run, type cmd

type shutdown.exe -a

type echo dcpromo >%systemroot%\debug\dcpromo.log

type attrib +r %systemroot%\debug\dcpromo.log

set up and internet firewall by right clicking on your lan and
selecting properties

open task mgr

end any of these

_up.exe
avserve
avserve2
skynetave
hkey.exe
msiwin84.exe
wmiprvsw.exe

do not end wmiprvse.exe

install update 835732

then go to www.microsoft.com/security/incident/sasser.mspx

After you've installed the update, you can remove the Internet Connection Firewall. It is recommended you use Sygate or Zone Alarm though.

-=jonnyrotten=-

Let us know how it works, remember you must be disconnected from the internet in order to apply this fix effectively.

When I type in the shutdown -a part, it says:

Isn't the Sasser worm the one that restarts your computer all by itself? Mine doesn't do that. I just restart my computer and when Windows is loaded, I get that little box with the error message on it and then it restarts again, with the message until I press F8 for Safe Mode.

Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

I was wondering if I might have W32.Nimos.Worm rather than Sasser
http://securityrespo...nimos.worm.html

I only have AVG and Avast, and I can't find that particular virus in either of their virus encylcopedia/definitions. Is there a free/cheap/trial virus software that can detect this?

Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean" checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

And a free trojan scan here:
http://www.moosoft.com/

Be sure to empty your temporary folders also. Click "My Computer" right click "Hard Disk (usually C:\) click "Properties" click the "Disk Cleanup" button and make all temporary folders are selected.

Housecall found these:

TROJ SMALL.FY - Non Cleanable - C:\Windows\System32\julie.exe

TROJ ISRBAR.X - Non Cleanable - C:\Windows\System32\istinstall_154074.exe

I went ahead and deleted those files.

Oops, I really need you to click the link in my signature and download the Newest Hijack This. You are using an old version. I suggest deleting the version you have and then download the new one and post new log so we can check for anything else that might be lurking around in there.

When I tried opening it, it mentioned something about being opened in a Temporary folder, and since temp. folders are emptied regularly, I should copy it to a different folder. After I clicked OK, this is the log I get.
