After being told erroneous info by Microsoft following a HAL.DLL corruption, I tried the in-place upgrade using my Windows XP PRO disk as specified here on the forum (and yes, it's a real one). It gets mid-way in the installation and wants ASMS, which it does not seem to read of the CD.

I tried a different XP PRO CD just in case the disc was damaged. No dice. I copied the whole ASMS directory to the C: drive in recovery console. It seems to see it but talks about an an error on line 4 of one of the files. The CDs are both oem XP Pro with SP1 (from Microsoft). The system has never been anything but XP pro and is a single boot system.

Any suggestions??

Thanks!

so, do you currently have an OS on this machine that functions and you are repairing, or is this now a hosed machine?

Wel, it has been function fine for months with XP pro. Then HAL vanished, and I replaced it. Now I have the ASMS error. All of the data is still there. I just need the OS to function.

In other words, your only access is through the recovery console.

Your problem is not the cd, but the cd-rom....there is a communication error of some sort.

Let me try something...need to reboot.

Is this ntfs or fat32?

It's NTFS. I tried to switch out my DVD to a vanilla 100% MS approved CD player, but no such luck.

Microsoft told me to move the drive to another machine as a slave and grab data and reformat.

However, it's a RAID array, and the RAID is ON the motherboard, so I cant simply swap them out. I can add an IDE as a master, but there HAS to be an easier solution. Doesn't there?
