Been battling AV Gold and hookdump.exe for about 3 days now.

Ran Ad-Aware SE, CWShredder, Spybot S&D, TDS-3 as outlined on GTG website. Also, Norton Internet Security.

Thanks very much for your kind assistance.

Hello strikeeagle, welcome to Geeks to Go! I'm Kristy and I will be helping you.

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as AVGoldfix.reg
Set Filetype to All Files and save it somewhere easy to find. We will use it later.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Components\1]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Intel system tool"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\AntivirusGold]

*Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
C:\Windows\System32\hookdump.exe
C:\Windows\System32\winnook.exe
C:\Windows\desktop.html
C:\Windows\screen.html

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt if you get one.
*If the computer does not reboot by itself, do it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Doubleclick the AVGoldfix.reg we made earlier.
And (still in safe mode) use the DiskCleanup Tool to empty all your Temp folders.

Delete the entire folder C:\Program Files\AntiVirusGold

In the Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info"

Then boot back to normal, run HijackThis again and post a new log.

Kristy,

Thanks for helping. New HJT Log follows. I had some difficulties with your instructions. I'm afraid I'm a dummy:

AVGoldfix.reg is now on my desktop.

Killbox.exe is now on my desktop. I copied the highlighted text to the clipboard, and confirmed it's there, but for some reason I can't copy it from the clipboard to Killbox.exe?

Don't understand the DiskCleanup Tool. Does it apply to Windows 98?

Don't have a folder C:\Program Files\AntiVirusGold.

Don't understand your Control Panel instructions.

Well, did I make a mess of things? Ready to try pcanywhere before my computer turns into a boat anchor - LOL?

Kristy,

I see no evidence of AVG or hookdump.exe now.

Interesting that housecall was able to delete hookdump, whereas Norton Internet Security was not?

Thanks so much for your help.

Hello strikeeagle,

I'm happy to hear that! As long as your computer is running normally, you should be set!

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.
