Please SAVE THIS PAGE or secure a PRINT COPY of the instructions for reference.
=====================================
1.) Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
Do NOT run it yet.

2.) Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

3.) Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

4.) If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Do NOT run the scan yet!

5.) Download and install Cleanup. Do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
(How to boot in Safe Mode...)
===================================================
Please close all remaining windows, disconnect from the internet, open HijackThis then click SCAN. Please put a check on the following items listed below:

O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

O16 - DPF: {EEECA057-AD0F-44A7-8BE5-8634CEDBDBD1} - http://akamai.downlo...tpe32_EN_XP.cab

Make sure to double check the items you have selected,then click Fix Checked.
===================================================

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware 1.06r and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Be sure to View Hidden and System Files.

Through Windows Explorer, delete the following folder(s) or files(s) if they exist (in bold):
  • C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
Finally, Empty Recycle Bin

Now run CleanUp. When you click the Close button you will be prompted to reboot, agree to it.

===================================================
Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Thanks for posting a response. I was at camp with my son last week and will be out of town on business this week. I should be able to try out your suggestions next weekend.

Will you be browsing your computer within this weekend? If that would be the case then I would need another fresh HijackThis log, it would be possible you will be getting additional infections and the proposed fixed will not be applicable to it.

It's actually my brother's PC. It has sitting unassembled on my living room floor until I can get to it this weekend--probably later tonight. I'll be sure to rerun HijackThis again and compare the logs before starting. If they're significantly different, I'll post the new log and wait for a response before working the issue.

I've finished the procedure and am including the log files as attachments. I ended up running Ad-Aware twice--I forgot to update the definition files the first time.

So far, so good but I haven't run the computer much yet. Here's the Hijackthis.log file...

I've attached the hijackthis log file here... Attached File  hijackthis.log.txt   7.06KB   141 downloads

So far the system seems to be running okay. However, I plan on updating XP to SP 2 and then including the latest XP patches...

I'm also thinking of disabling the XP firewall and installing Sygate Personal Firewall. It's a little annoying because it will ask permission for applications to access the Internet, but once you've set it up it's pretty transparent until you do a Windows update or install new software.

I use Sygate Personal Firewall and have had very good luck with it on a Windows 2000 box. Even with network gaming the overhead is negligible (unlike McAfee's firewall which brought my system down to it's knees--you could hear it groaning via the speakers it was so bad :tazz: )

Surfmonkey is not showing up in the list of programs that can be removed via the Control Panel. However, the C:\WINDOWS\surfmonkey folder is there and includes six files: epevents.dll, EStream.dll, IMClient.dll, Profldr.exe, RedLight.dll, and SMProxy.exe.

I did find the following press release from Earthlink regarding the topic...

http://www.earthlink.../pr_surfmonkey/

I'm guessing ti was installed as part of the Earthlink Parental Controls program. I can replace the uninstallation of surfmonkey from your instructions with the removal Earthlink Parental Controls and then proceed as instructed but I can't do it in safe mode. It will have to be done in normal mode because I get an error stating that the Windows Installer Service could not be accessed in safe mode [or there is some other problem with the Windows Installer Service].

Any thoughts on this? Is it really an issue given the Earthlink Press release?

Here's a FAQ for Earthlink Total Access that includes info on surfmonkey. Still no info on removal though. If you still think that this should be removed, maybe Earthlink tech support can help on that one. :tazz:

I figured it was safe enough to remove Earthlink Parental Controls to see if surfmonkey would be removed because I can always download the program from the Earthlink web site and reinstall it--the fact that Earthlink Total Access has updates available kind of convinced me to do it.

Here's the log after removal...

The fact that surfmonkey is a legitimate program for parental control is that it has the program paths located at %System Root%\Program Files\Surf Monkey and NOT the false one located at C:\WINDOWS\surfmonkey. Can you see the difference?

;) ;) :beer: :help: :beer: :tazz: :tazz: :help: :yeah: :yeah: :help:

You just did it! Very great job, nicely done.

Congratulations! ;) your system is CLEAN!

WinXP Reset & All-Clean1

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus (these are also free for personal use):It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visitmonthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scannersweekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?
