<_< We have a 1 server network using Windows Server 2000. I need to replace an existing computer that is old, slow and running Win98SE with another existing computer that is faster and running Windows 2000. I have the following question:

I would like to rename the W2000 computer, although I believe someone in the past told me that is not a good idea. Would this cause a problem? The old W98 computer is called TomWS and the 2000 computer is called AmyWS. I would like to disconnect TomWS and then move the newer computer to that location. Then I would like to rename AmyWS to TomWS or at least TomWS1 and join it to the network. If I were to name it TomWS, would the network already recognize it or would I have to rejoin up to the network?

I feel pretty silly asking this question, but I need to make sure I'm going about this correctly.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

I think you will have to pull both computers from the network and rejoin them because the Computer names are linked to their own MAC addresses and the server will be confused as to which one is which.
