HI,

I have a HP pavilion desktop and windows won't start

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Start Windows Normally

None of these options work,When I use the safe mode, a gray bar appears at the bottem of the screen and freezes. I tryed to use the repair function on the XP disc, but the CD drive will not read it. And to make matters worse I cant seem to open the BIOS.

Any advice would be very helpful.

I was my friends old computer, He downloaded lots of music so he may have gotten a virus.

Do you have your Windows installation CD? What you can do is a chkdsk /r.

Just pop your cd into your cd-rom drive, let your computer boot from cd-rom. Once you get to the first text based menu for Windows, hit "R" and then it will take you to a dos like prompt. From there you just select which partion or OS install you want to work with, usually "1" or whatever is listed for C:\Windows. Then if you have an admin password, type that or if not just hit enter. Once you get to the prompt just type in "chkdsk /r" and let it do it's thing. Once done, just type exit and you should reboot and attempt to boot into Windows. If this does not work it's possible that it might be a hardware issue. What was the last thing you remember doing prior to this happening?

It starts up, and goes to the black screen with this on it:

None of these work, it only freezes after I choose one.

5339, go ahead and try my proposed solution. I am certain this will work. If not, post back and we can go from there.

When I put in the disck the: "prees any key to boot fom disk" dose not come up, it only goes to the menu. The last thing I remember was my friend downloading some songs then I shut it down and this came up.

You're going to have to change the settings either by pressing F1 as soon as the computer reboots. Just keep pressing F1 and a menu should appear. From there you're going to want to go to the "boot" section and select your cd-rom drive first and foremost then reboot. It will find your cd in your cd drive.

If F1 does nothing then try F10 or F12. Once of those should prompt you with either a BIOS screen or a one time boot menu.

Okay, I dont have the computer with me at the moment but if anything comes up ill let you know.
