Hello KMcD,

Welcome to Geeks to Go my name is Snickets and I will be helping you today!!

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

First-

You have a CoolWebSearch infection.

Download CWShredder here to its own folder.

Download and install CleanUp! Here

Run the CleanUp! installer. You dont need to do anything with it right now.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Second-

You have the antivirusgold infection-

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as AVGoldfix.reg
Set Filetype to All Files and save it somewhere easy to find. We will use it later.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Components\1]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Intel system tool"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\AntivirusGold]

*Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
C:\Windows\System32\hookdump.exe
C:\Windows\System32\winnook.exe
C:\Windows\desktop.html
C:\Windows\screen.html

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt if you get one.
*If the computer does not reboot by itself, do it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Doubleclick the AVGoldfix.reg we made earlier.
And (still in safe mode) use the DiskCleanup Tool to empty all your Temp folders.

Delete the entire folder C:\Program Files\AntiVirusGold

In the Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info"

Third-

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

I am still having problems with my computer. First, the start menu has been changed so that I cannot get to run, find, and all programs. Also, My Computer and Network Places are now named "folder." When I tried to run those virus scanners you listed, I couldn't get them to work, one didn't open the webpage, another one uses ie, but my ie dosn't work since the virus. Also, I cannot open things on the background by double-clicking, I have to right-click. Here is the hijack file:

Hello KCmD,

There is still some cleaning that we will need to do on this machine.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

Step 1-

1.CLICK THIS TO LINK TO BE SURE YOU CAN VIEW HIDDEN FILES

2.Please go here and download the free 30 day trial for trojan hunter.

Save the program to a place where you can find it easily, like your desktop. Then once saved you need to install the trojan hunter onto your computer. Then it will prompt you to update the definitions, please do so at this time.

Once the program opens-

1. Push the full scan button at the top right hand corner of the program.

2. Then once the scan completes, please remove all trojans found on the system by checking the individual infections, then clicking on clean.

3. Once the clean is complete, please copy the scan log and paste it into the next reply.

Step 2-

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCShield] regsvr32 /s "C:\WINDOWS\System32\sfg_0253.dll"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [netpx.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\netpx.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [PCShield] regsvr32 /s "C:\WINDOWS\System32\sfg_0253.dll"
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Viewpoint Search - res://C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll/CXTSEARCH.HTML
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {6685509E-B47B-4f47-8E16-9A5F3A62F683} - file://C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\Sy350\Tp350\scri350a.htm (file missing) (HKCU)
O23 - Service: Workstation NetLogon Service ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\iptq32.exe (file missing)

Step 3-

After this is complete please do the following:

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

Ebates-By any name
SafeSearch/PCShield

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\sfg_0253.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\netpx.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\iptq32.exe

After that, Rebootinto normal mode and repost a new hijack this log and the trojan hunter log into this thread for me to review.

Thank you,

Snickets

Hello KcMD,

Your log looks alot better, there are just a couple of things we need to do in order to get this cleaned up.

Step 1-

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Optional Removals-

Fixing them here will not prevent you from opening them manually as needed. Your choice to fix based on your needs:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPHUPD05] c:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\{45B6180B-DCAB-4093-8EE8-6164457517F0}\hphupd05.exe
(Description: HP software update checker and wizard launcher.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPHUPD05] c:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\{45B6180B-DCAB-4093-8EE8-6164457517F0}\hphupd05.exe
(Description: HP software update checker and wizard launcher.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_02\bin\jusched.exe
(Description: Sun Java update scheduler. Checks for updates. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

Step 2-

After this is complete please do the following:

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):
MBKWBAR
MYWAY- By any name

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if presen
C:\Program Files\MBKWBar\
C:\Program Files\MyWay\myBar\

Please delete these files using Windows Explorer(if present):
C:\WINDOWS\ceres.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\Kevin\Desktop\ImageConverter2.1.exe/BJmV.exe

Step 3-

Please run another trojan hunter scan, and remove whatever files that it finds on the system.

After that, Rebootinto normal mode and repost a new hijack this log and the trojan hunter log into this thread for me to review.

Thank you,

Snickets

Hello KcMD,

Alright we are making headway I promise.

One last infection in your hijack this that I am concerned about.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

Step 1-

Click here to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file then double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Place the following lines (complete paths) in bold in the "Full Path of File to Delete" box in Killbox, and click the red button with the white X on it after each. Keep track of any files it tells you either could not be found or could not be deleted, as you'll need those later:

C:\Program Files\MBKWBar\IEToolBar.dll
C:\Program Files\MBKWBar\TManager.exe

For the files that it either couldn't find or couldn't delete, in the killbox again this time, put a mark next to "Delete on Reboot". Copy and paste each file into the file name box, then click the red button with the X after each. It will ask you if you want to reboot each time you click it, answer NO until after you've pasted the last file name, at which time you should answer Yes.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Please reboot your computer now!!!!

Step 2-

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

O3 - Toolbar: Microbuddy - {EA5A82FB-D6BE-44F9-9363-B1ABABC153C1} - C:\Program Files\MBKWBar\IEToolBar.dll
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MBKWBarManager] C:\Program Files\MBKWBar\TManager.exe

After this is complete please do the following:

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):
MBKWBAR

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):
C:\Program Files\MBKWBar\

After that, Rebootinto normal mode and repost a new hijack this log into this thread for me to review.

Thank you,

Snickets

Hello KcMD,

I know you had some concerns earlier about add/remove is this still happening and are there any other issues that are going on still?

Great Job your hijack this log looks clean!!!

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and Spyware Aid's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

Thank you,

Snickets

Both System restore and add/remove programs shows up blank. Internet explorer doesn't open any more, and media player is also unable to play. Also, I am unable to open some of the programs from the background. I have to right-click, then click open to get it to work. And the search and run options are missing from the start menu. If I end up having to format my hard drive, would I be able to transfer my files to another computer without worrying about transfering viruses now? And I haven't been checking or sending e-mail since the virus. Would it be safe to do so know?

Thanks,
Kevin

Hello KMcD,

Here is what I would like to try before you reformat the machine.

Norton Anti Virus-
1. Go here and review how to uninstall Norton Anti Virus withouth using add/remove programs.

Then please remove it from your computer completely.

Kapersky online scan-
2. Then please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan and then please remove anything that this finds from the computer.

3. Then please try getting into your add/remove programs again and let me know right away.

Thank you,

Snickets

Hello KcMD,

Yes I think I have a solution to that problem you are having.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

Step 1- Seeing keys in start menu

1. Right click on start menu button.
Click on properties
Click on Start menu tab at the top of the box
Click on customize
Then you will see a box under Advanced Start menu options
Click on the Display Run box
Then hit the ok button and close out the properties box.

Then let me know if this solution has worked for you. Please follow the instructions from the previous post as well if you would to see if we can get your add/remove items back up.

Thank you,

Snickets
