Do you have other AV software running on your machine?
If yes, Disconnect from the Internet. Turn off your other AV software. Then try to start AVG. If AVG starts then you had a conflict between the two AV programs, Also as a rule of thumb, more is not better when it comes to AV software, as trying to run 2 at once will most likely cause problems.

If you are currently not running any AV software and having this problem, I reccommend uninstalling and trying a new download and install from the grisoft site.

You state you are running XP Pro, Are you using the default Firewall that comes with XP? If you do not know what a firewall is just let us know. AV software and a good Firewall are the 2 most important pieces of software you need if connecting to the Internet.
