First, let me apologize up front - it's not in my nature to just join a forum and post a "help me" topic - so please forgive me for that. I'd normally like to contribute, but I'm getting out of my depth now.
The problem - manifested itself with a popup box appearing after logging on - message "windoes couldn't find file c:\windoes\system32\winwm.exe".
It's annoying, but not earth shattering some might say...but there's more.
Progress so far - after trolling this board and asking a few pointed questions on a local (Australian) board, I've gotten to this stage:
I run Norton antivirus, norton firewall, adaware all the time - have done for a LONG time...
More recently I have used the following products in an attempt to clean:
-Avast antivirus
-Trend Micro housecall
-mcafee online scan
-about:buster
-HSRemove
-MS Anti Spware beta
-Spybot S&D
-CWShredder
The system now appears "clean", although I suspect something else is going on. The runonce section of the registry gets a fresh listing for winwm.exe every time I reboot. So if I delete the runonce entry, it is back next time.
Likewise for wintc32.exe - if I delete it from the run section of the registry, it is back next time I reboot.
That is what is frustrating me - if my system is "clean" then how can this be happening?
It's been suggested I backup and reboot. Yes, I could do that, but that would be admitting defeat...and I hate to lose! It's about time I was due for a rebuild, but I want to do it on my terms - not someone elses :-) Sorry, I'm stubborn I know.
So can any of you people out there help me with this? It's not the worst problem on the planet I know - but I'd just like to learn a little more about what's going on inside my PC.
