Greetings. Im a first time poster so bear with me.

The other evening my pc was attacked by a trojan/virus. AntivirusGold2 and PSGuard automatically installed themselves, and my desktop was replaced by some kinda active webpage stating that my computer was infected and that I needed to "click here" in order to solve the problem. Also my homepage was redirected to another ad asking me to "click here" to remove spyware.

At the time I had McAfee VirusScan installed and running. It caught a few things and automatically "cleaned" them, however there was still quite a mess left behind including the AntivirusGold2 and PSGuard. I then opened Webroot's Spy Sweeper and ran that. It found a few more things and removed them. All the while McAfee is constantly telling me that:

"The file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WININET.DLL is infected by the W32/Alemod.b.dll virus and cannot be deleted."

- AND -

"The file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\OLEADM.dll is infected by the Spy-Agent.h trojan and cannot be cleaned."

I then rebooted in safemode and ran Spy Sweeper and McAfee again. McAfee picked up the two virus again but still could not clean or delete them.

After pulling my hair out I ended up here at geekstogo, registered and followed the steps instructed at the "start here" link for suspected spyware infection. I downloaded and ran CleanUp!, downloaded Ad-aware SE and ran it, ran CWShredder, ran Spybot S&D, performed the online virus scan, rebooted and then installed and ran Hijack This.

All of this definately seemed to get rid of alot of harmful files, although McAfee is still prompting me about those two viruses that it cannot clean and the desktop is still acting strange; the initial "you've been infected, click here to save your computer" desktop is no longer showing, it is instead now a white background that changes color when i click on a window. I think it is still an active webpage desktop of some sort; when i right click on it show the "view source" selection.

Anyway I haven't a clue what i'm doing here. Hopefully i havent made things worse. Also I made sure to re-enable all startup files that Spy Sweeper was blocking prior to running Hijack This. Thanks in advance for any help.

Here's the log:

Please SAVE THIS PAGE or secure a PRINT COPY of the instructions for reference.
==================================================

1.) RIGHT-CLICK [ HERE ] and Save As (In IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download DelDomains.inf to your desktop.
To use: RIGHT-CLICK DelDomains.inf and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

2.) Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop. Do NOT run it yet.

3.) Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

4.) Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

5.) If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Do NOT run the scan yet!

6.) Download and install Cleanup. Do NOT run it yet, we will run it later.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
(How to boot in Safe Mode...)
===================================================
We will now fix the remaining problems with HijackThis. Please close all remaining windows, disconnect from the internet, open HijackThis then click SCAN. Please put a check on the following items listed below:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,Search = http://bigbr.cc (obfuscated)
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,Search = http://bigbr.cc (obfuscated)
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [24F.tmp] C:\DOCUME~1\Mick\LOCALS~1\Temp\24F.tmp.exe 2 10001
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [251.tmp] C:\DOCUME~1\Mick\LOCALS~1\Temp\251.tmp.exe 0 10001
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tibs5] C:\WINDOWS\system32\tibs5.exe

Make sure to double check the items you have selected, then click Fix Checked.
==================================================
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.
========================================================
Be sure to View Hidden and System Files.

Through Windows Explorer, delete the following folder(s) or files(s) if they exist (in bold):
  • C:\Program Files\PSGuard
  • C:\Program Files\AntivirusGold
  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\tibs5.exe
Finally, Empty Recycle Bin

Now run CleanUP! Close this afterwards it will then reboot to Normal Mode.
=======================================================
Reboot to NORMAL MODE.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Hi kool808. Thanks for coming to my aid. Before I continue on with your instructions I need to tell you that our power went off the other night and as a result my pc was turned off. Do I need to run HiJack This again to provide you with a new log?

I'll wait for a response before doing anything. Thankyou.

Hi there bugeyedblue!

Not needed, unless you come to another infected websites and added another infection then we will need another fresh HJT Log.

Did you install any new programs?

If you haven't done anything similar to what I mentioned then we proceed with the fix. :tazz:

One other thing before I start. I've noticed that the link to Panda ActiveScan takes me to a blank page. Do you have any other online virus scanner to recommend?

Skip the part where you need to place the shortcut for Panda Scan, instead proceed with the fixes then after you reach the last part of the fix connect online to Panda Scan.

Have an On-line scan at this sites too: Trend Micro or Panda Scan or BitDefender.

Okay done. Here are all the logs that you've requested. I ended up using BitDefender, which seems to have found two infected files that it wasn't able to disinfect. That log was saved as an html document, which should be attached. Thanks.

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as AVGoldfix.reg
Set Filetype to All Files and save it somewhere easy to find. We will use it later.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Desktop\Components\1]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Intel system tool"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\AntivirusGold]

1.) [Click Here] to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
2.) Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
3.) In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
4.) Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\Windows\System32\hookdump.exe
C:\Windows\System32\winnook.exe
C:\Windows\desktop.html
C:\Windows\screen.html

5.) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
6.) Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt if you get one.
7.) If the computer does not reboot by itself, do it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.
(How to boot in Safe Mode...)

Doubleclick the AVGoldfix.reg we made earlier.

And (still in safe mode) use the CleanUp! tool, but do NOT reboot yet.

Through Windows Explorer browse and delete the entire folder C:\Program Files\AntiVirusGold
Then Empty Recyle Bin

In the Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info"

Then boot back to normal, run HijackThis again and post a new log.

Please SAVE THIS PAGE or secure a PRINT COPY of the instructions for reference.
==========================================
The infection is dodging the bullets! Let us do this for the second time.

Please DISABLE your SpySweeper and firewalls (if present) temporarily. We will re-ENABLE them later.

Please read the instructions for About:Buster then download it to a safe location where you can easily remember it.
Please Download the stand-alone version of CoolWebShredder
Download SpSeHjfix HERE

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Unzip SpSeHjfix to its own folder (ie c:\SpSeHjfix)

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Reboot in SAFE MODE. (How to boot in Safe Mode...)
================================================
Please close all remaining windows, disconnect from the internet, open HijackThis then click SCAN. Please put a check on the following items listed below:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [addvp32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\addvp32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [d3fq.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3fq.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [d3iq32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3iq32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iels.exe] C:\WINDOWS\iels.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sysbn.exe] C:\WINDOWS\sysbn.exe

Make sure to double check the items you have selected, then click Fix Checked.
================================================

1.) Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

2.) Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

3.) Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

4.) Now run SpSeHjfix. A log will be saved in the same folder that you put the exe into. Please post the results of that log in your next reply.

5.) Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

6.) Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

7.) Now run CleanUp!. Click CleanUp and allow it to delete all the temporary files. Reboot your computer into normal windows.
=================================================
Once in NORMAL MODE.

1.) Open Killbox.exe to start the program.
2.) In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
3.) Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\Windows\System32\hookdump.exe
C:\Windows\System32\winnook.exe
C:\Windows\desktop.html
C:\Windows\screen.html
C:\WINDOWS\addvp32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3fq.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\d3iq32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\iels.exe
C:\WINDOWS\sysbn.exe

4.) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
5.) Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt if you get one.
6.) If the computer does not reboot by itself, do it manually.

After the reboot, please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky Online Scan or if that doesnt work, you can have an On-line scan at this sites:
Trend Micro or Panda Scan or BitDefender.
(Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

1. new HijackThis Log
2. Smitfiles.txt
3. about:buster log
4. SpSehFix Log
5. Ewido Log

ABOUTBUSTER

Run-time error '339':

Component 'comctl32.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly
registered: a file is missing or invalid

Once the program was opened it only had two possible selections: "Update" and "Begin Removal".

There was no prompt to scan for "Alternate Data Streams". There was no prompt to allow the shutdown of explorer.exe. There was no prompt asking for a second pass. And there was no prompt asking to save log file.

It looks like the program scanned for "Alternate Data Streams", then it went through and deleted a bunch of files and that was when the error occured.

We have to do this again, the AntivirusGold is still present!

Please read the instructions for About:Buster then download it to a safe location where you can easily remember it.
Click the Update button, download all available updates.
Do NOT run the scans yet.

If the error persist on comctl32.ocx:

[ README ]and  [ PRODUCT UPDATE ]

Service Pack 1 addresses problems in dbgrid32.ocx, msrdc20.ocx, and msrdo20.dll related to data-binding and other issues. Also included are fixes for the incompatibility problems with comctl32.ocx. There is also an update to the VB5 Setup Kit and some of the .cab files for the ActiveX component download. These .cab files are not installed by the Visual Studio Service Pack, but are included on the Service Pack compact disc.

If the above fix didn't solve it then:

Please proceed with this fix first, http://www.ascentive.com/support/new/suppo...me=COMCTL32.OCX. After the suggested procedures, tell me how your system is working, then we will proceed with the next steps of the fixes.

===================================================
Please close all remaining windows, disconnect from the internet, open HijackThis then click SCAN. Please put a check on the following items listed below:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AntivirusGold] C:\Program Files\AntivirusGold\AntivirusGold.exe /h

Make sure to double check the items you have selected,then click Fix Checked.
===================================================

2.) Run the About:Buster, then click Begin Removal. Fix all found infections.
Close it afterwards.

Reboot back into NORMAL MODE Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!

Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Okay, I downloaded the comctl32.ocx file from www.ascentive.com and it was sucessfully registered. Is there something I can do to test that all is good, or shall I continue with your procedures?
