Hi, My Internet Explorer wants to keep resetting it's self to the "Work Offline" mode.

That just started all of a sudden today. I keep getting the little window that asks if I want to connect to the internet or continue to work offline, and I have to keep un-checking the work offline block in the file menu.

I have DSL and I am not supposed to ever be off line. Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyone know what to do to correct it?

Do you still have your XP disc? If so, reinstall Internet Explorer 6 and see if that fixes your problem.

I'm not exactly sure if it's this way in english versions of XP because I am translating it from Dutch.

How to reinstall IE 6:

Start > control panel > software > add/remove Windows components > uncheck IE 6 and click next. Follow the instructions on your screen and insert the XP disc when asked to do so. Reboot and see see if your problem is fixed.

Hi SAAB, Shoot! No I do not have any of the disks for this machine. When I first got this PC I had to install SP 2 as it was just running Win XP Home with no updates.

When I installed SP 2 it was supposed to have installed IE 6, and when I pull up the IE information it says that I have IE 6, however, I have been noticing that as my AV scanner runs that it is showing that it is scanning files in IE 5.

I do not understand why that is happening, and as I have been having other trouble that relates to IE 5 I am not even sure which version of IE I am accessing the internet with.

Now all of a sudden IE is acting like a spoiled brat, and having these fits to "work offline" even though I am never offline.

Got any other Ideas? Wendy

You can't have an IE 5 installed on XP I think. XP comes with IE 6 and in a few months IE 7 will be released .

Hi SAAB, OK here is all I know for sure, when I got this thing I got courious and checked out the MS update site.

I found lots of "Free Stuff" that MS had, and somehow or another I found out that all I had was "Plain Win XP Home" and that there were lots of goodies that I should install to get it up to date.

One of those things was SP 1 and SP 2. After reading all I could stand to read I opted for SP 2, and installed it.

Now here in the last couple of months I have been having IE crashes, or hangs. Shoot, sometimes when it hangs it freezes everything, and I have to use the kill switch to be able to restart my PC.

I always send the report thing to MS, and I always get back a notice to click here for more information.

I click that, and I get an advisory from MS saying that I could overcome this problem by installing IE 6. I have gone to the recommended site three or four times and ran the download.

I installed it, a couple of times with no ? problem ?, and then a couple of times when I tried to install it, I get a notice saying that IE 6 is already installed.

Got anymore ideas on what might be wrong, or what I can do to get this thing right?

You could try to uninstall your IE before downloading the new one.

You can uninstall IE the same way as reinstalling it. (I posted it up in this topic before)

You could try borrowing someones disc but I am not quite sure if that will be possible and legal.

Solution:

- start Internet Explorer
- go to Internet Options in the Tools menu
- click on the Connections tab
- select "Never dial a connection"

I recently had the exact same problem that Wendy described.
Somehow the option "Dial whenever a network connection is
not present" was selected.

If you use a wireless network, you can often have little
intervals of time when the network isn't available. Once
IE shifts into "Work Offline" mode it is absurdly tenatious
about staying that way.

Hi Reid M. Pinchback, Thanks for the try, however that option always seems to be checked, and does not reset it's self.

However on that same tab upder LAN setting it does keep putting it's own check into the "use proxy" box, and that causes me to get pages that don't load, but I just go uncheck it and it's fine for awhile.

That work offline thing is kind of hit and miss too. It will do it reaguarly for an hour or so then stop for a day or two before it does it all over again.
