Guys,

Just spent 10mins typing up my problems when this bloody trojan killed my explorer window. This time i'll be brief and maybe edit and add detail later. Basically i've spent 3hours following for malaware removal steps usin everything you recommend. The PC is still pretty bad with Trojan-Puper, oneclicksearches, Explorer problem dialog boxes, Virus s/w appearing on my desktop, HTML_SMIT FRAUD.C blue screen type messages.

Basically a real mess.........

Here's my HJT and Ewido logs - any help would be greatly appreciated......TIA.

Hi mjw123 and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. If you haven't logged in go to Geeks to Go and do so. Then proceed to item a.

If you already have logged in, go directly to item a.

a. Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window.
b. In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
c. If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there

2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

4. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

A. Close ALL windows except HJT

B. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')

C. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Note: You have a few bad ones in there and I will be starting with things that will not seem relevant to the problem, as you perceive it. Some infections just have to be removed first because they mess up the rest if left intact.

Regards,

Trevuren

It is really important you perform everything exactly as I ask you in the same order, so I strongly suggest you print this out, because you have to work in safe mode. This is complicated so please take your time.

1. Please download Process Explorer:
http://www.sysintern...s/procexpnt.zip

2. Download Killbox:
http://www.atribune....ads/KillBox.exe

3. Reboot into Safe Mode` ( without networking support !)

the rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

4. Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen.
Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of q1747203_disk.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the q1747203_disk.dll under winlogon click OK.

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of q1747203_disk.dll then click the kill button.
Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you have done that click OK again.

5. Next run HijackThis and place a check beside the following.

O20 - Winlogon Notify: style2 - C:\WINDOWS\q1747203_disk.dll (file missing)

Now click fix checked and close HijackThis.

6. Double click on Killbox.exe and then check the delete on reboot button.

Enter the following filepath and filename into the Full path of file to delete box

C:\WINDOWS\q1747203_disk.dll

Click the red circle with the white x and allow your computer to reboot.

After your computer has rebooted please run Hijackthis again and post a new HijackThis log.

Hi Trevurnen,

Firstly a big thank you for getting back to me, it is much appreciated.

OK - I follwed you steps until I got to step 4.

In safe mode I ran procexp.exe but in both winlogon.exe and explorer.exe there were NO entries for q1747203_disk.dll - in fact there were none that looked anything like this.

Instead of continuing with steps 5 and beyond I thought it would be safest to consult you first.

Is there anything else I can try ?

Out of interest I looked in the C:\WINDOWS directory to see if q1747203_disk.dll existed - it didn't but three other did they are :-

q1698812_disk.dll
q3034718_disk.dll
q4370625_disk.dll

Hope you can work this one out - many thanks again.

That's good

1. Please delete the 3 files you found.

2. Reboot your system

3. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Trevuren,

Sounds more promising :tazz: - I checked after removing and rebooting and the 3 files were still no longer there. No other 9%%%%% dll's either.

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://www.oneclicks...earch.php?qq=%1

O20 - Winlogon Notify: style2 - C:\WINDOWS\q5712750_disk.dll (file missing)

Now, using Windows Explorer, DELETE the following files/folders (with all their content), if they still exist:

C:\Program Files\Nuria<===Folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp74B3.tmp
C:\PROGRAM FILES\NEWDOT NET<===Folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msmsgs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\intel32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\q5712750_disk.dll

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

I could find the active scan log but it did find about 24 problems - although i'm not entirely sure that is cleared them properly afterwards.....my pc is asking me to reboot all the time to properly install packages....not sure if this is genuine or not.

Can you see any further issues ?

I'll try and run that panda scan again later today and get a log to you if I can - it takesabout 45mins !!!

Many thanks again,

1. Download CWShredder here to its own folder.

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Reboot your computer into normal mode.

2. Now you can delete everything that you wanted to.

3. REBOOT your system

4. Post a new HJT log and if everything is OK, we can commence our final but essential cleanup.

Regards,

Trevuren

One strange thing I notice on startup is while the startup services are been loaded theres a pause and my screen goes black for a second before returning - almost like a screen refresh. Never had this in the past.

Many thanks again,
Mike.

I also have that black screen pause on mine and I never have figured out how to change it. In fact, I don't even notice it anymore. :tazz:

Your log looks clean, if there are no more malware related problems, I think we should commence the final but essential cleanup procedures

Well it only started recently so I guess it's one of the packages performing a check. Never mind not a big issue after the recent problems :tazz:

Ready for the final clear up when you - any recommendations on pro-active measures to stop this happening again would be much appreciated.

Thanks again,

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,

Trevuren
