I appreciate your help in this matter. I am so glad to have found this site. I have read a few threads regarding webrebates and so far I have followed the following advise:

~ Updated and ran Ad-ware as well as Spybot

~ Updated Windows 98

~ Ran an on-line virus scan. It found 2. It cleaned one and told me that it was unable to clean the other. I tried to get more info about this particular virus but my computer froze up and I had to reboot.

~ Ran an on-line Trojan scan. It detected 94 Trojans and cleaned all of them but one.

I'm still getting the pop ups and my computer runs slow at times. Webrebates is still listed in my programs and will not allow me to remove it.

What else can I do?

Thank you for your time!

Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results. <_<

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {20EC3D2D-33C1-4C9D-BC37-C2D500688DA2} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: LocalNRDObj Class - {00320615-B6C2-40A6-8F99-F1C52D674FAD} - C:\WINDOWS\LOCALNRD.DLL (file missing)

If you don't want the MusicMatch Jukebox tray icon, fix this one too:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MMTray] C:\Program Files\MusicMatch\MusicMatch Jukebox\mm_tray.exe

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log, and let us know how your system's working. <_<

Here is my new Hijack This log

I only deleted the items you suggested. I thought I should mention that the yahoo games (chess, poker, etc) are foreign to me. Should I also clean these off as well?

Webrebates is still in my programs lists and will not allow me to remove it still.

Yes, you can remove all of those 016 entries safely.

I don't see the webrebates in your log. Do you mean it's in your add/remove programs list?

If so, open the list up and click to remove.

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content.

Please repost another log so we can check it out. It looks clean.

I guess I'm not sure about the webrebates reference you alluded to. Please clarify and we'll help you out.

Okay. I did as you requested.

Yes, Webrebates is still located in my program file. When I click to remove it, I get a message telling me that uninstall will take a few moments and do I want to restart the computer when it's finished. I can click yes, no, or cancel. Regardless of what I click the computer does nothing. It will not uninstall. The same thing with Weatherbug. I can try to remove it and it seems to be going through the uninstall process but never actually does...rather it takes me to a weatherbug page and remains in my program file.

Here is my new log. Again, thank you for you time and assistance.

Actually running better. The majority of the pop ups are gone and the speed seems to have improved. The only other major problem.. which I described on the windows 98 board... is that windows will not shut down. It freezes every time now and I end up having to just turn off the computer. Later on when I turn the power back on, I get an error message telling me to click any key or click CTL, ALT, Delete to continue. When I do either, the computer does nothing so I have to reboot again. At this time, the computer opens in save mode and then I can click start and restart and the computer will then open up in normal mode. It is time consuming and a pain in the rump. <_< But this particular problem began before Webrebates snuck in.

Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN <_<

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use) Click Here.

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox Posted Image.
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. :D
