Not sure what else may be wrong with my system...
Received trojan-spy.html.smitfraud.c as well as bloodhound.w32.ep several days ago. Read a couple of similar posts, however, was unsure on how to go about cleaning infections(did not want to delete/add something not needed for this particular case) :tazz: thank you.

Hi There ttteeam :tazz:

Well i got to say that you have a lovely collection of malware there. While I am working out the fix for you, I need some information on one of the files on your PC.

This is the file i need info on.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\WINLOGONPC.EXE

Would you please -

1. Upload the file to here

http://www.thespykil...x.php?board=1.0

To upload the file, Just follow the link, press new topic, fill in the needed details and just give a link to this thread here at GtG & then press the browse button and then navigate to & select the file on your computer, and then when the file is listed in the window press Post to upload the file.
You do not have to register there to post the file.Do not post HJT logs here as they will not get dealt with

2. Get an online analysis of the file here -

http://virusscan.jotti.org

its a similar process of browse and select to submit the file to Jotti. Wait for the scan result

Please post the result of the Jotti scan here for me in your next post.

Hi There ttteeam ;)

Ok, I would strongly advise you to print these instructions out as they are quite complex and must be followed exactly.

On With The Fix

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Next scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:
===================================================
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Logon Procedure] WINLOGONPC.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [Windows Logon Procedure] WINLOGONPC.EXE
O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-111191113457} - file://c:\ied_s7.cab
O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-511111193457} - file://c:\x.cab
O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-511111193458} - file://c:\x.cab
O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-611111193457} - file://c:\wx.cab
O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-611111193458} - file://c:\wx.cab
O16 - DPF: {24311111-1111-1121-1111-111191113457} - file://c:\eied_s7.cab
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193457} - file://c:\ex.cab
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193458} - file://c:\ex.cab
O21 - SSODL: SystemCheck2 - {54645654-2225-4455-44A1-9F4543D34545} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll

When all these are selected, close all browsers and windows EXCEPT HJT and click FIX CHECKED, then exit HJT

Next, using Windows Explorer, find the following folder and delete it if it exists

C:\Program Files\Trust idle

Next, using Windows Explorer, find the following files and delete them if they exist

C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\WINLOGONPC.EXE
===================================================

Next Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Next Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Next Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

ThenReboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Good Luck :tazz:

Wow, no more "infected computer" icons in my tray... I was unable to run the panda scan for some reason...I waited nearly 45 minutes, and the progress bar for installation didn't go past the first block. Here is my new HJT log, my second ewido scan log (first scan was un-updated --> i'm an idiot), and the smitfile.txt log. Thank you so much for your continued patience.

Hi There

That looks much better :tazz:

tell me , did you upload the file for analysis to Jotti etc as I asked?

also, did you delete the "Trust Idle" folder ?

I would be gratefull if you can have a look to see if you have a file called "notepad.com", notice the extension, com not exe.

Hey, i couldn't find any file winlogonpc.exe, so i couldn't do that for you. I saw winlogon.exe, but no file with the added pc at the end...

Yes, i deleted the Trustidle folder in progam files.

I did a search, and did not come up with any file titled "notepad.com"

Hi There ttteeam :tazz:

Ok, just about done, dont worry about the files, as least they are gone.

Just 1 thing to fix ;)

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [One load] C:\PROGRA~1\Trust idle\user flag.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\PROGRA~1\Trust idle

Just to check that it is gone

After that, Reboot.

Please rescan using HJT and post your new log here so we can see whether your system is now clean.

I hope that this has been of some help to you.

UKbiker,
I'm very sorry for the delay. And yes, you have been more than helpful to me. Everything you have done has been 'appreciated' to the full extent of the word. My computer is running almost as good as new! :tazz: Was just curious if certain things could be edited out of the HJT, such as the msn messenger and yahoo messenger, etc (items i have tried deleting/uninstalling in the past). Anyhoo, here is my new HJT log. Thanks again!

Hi There ttteeam :help:

First of all...

Congratulations , your log is clean :tazz: ;) ;)

You asked about deleting items such as messenger apps with HJT, unfortunately, HJT does not work like that, if you want to delete an application, you should use the add/remove feature in the control panel, or the uninstall utility that comes with the app. in question. A usefull piece freeware that I sometimes use is Add/Remove Pro. (Click on the "Freeware"Link in the LH Pane). Have a look at it, you might find it usefull.

Just a general clean up now and we are done

Now you have to clean out your temporary files and flush your restore points:
  • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Click "OK" to remove them.
  • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
Flush System Restore.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Finally, defragment the HD. This will tidy things up after all the cleaning we have done.

So now that your PC is clean, how do you keep it that way?

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer alternatives available. ConsiderFirefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and Spyware Aid's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

Glad to have been of help
