I have also recently had problems with the Aurora pop-ups. I spent a couple days reading your helpful tutorials with the other folks. I've tried to apply what I could to my situation and I think I've actually pretty much got rid of everything bad but could you folks take a look and let me know if there is anything else I should do. Here's the HJT and ewido logs.

I'm guessing all the:

websearch.drsnsrch.com

entries are a problem yet. Along with...

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dbzqxt] c:\windows\system32\czgguyf.exe r
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [gos4Rkc8j] umatopl.exe

I wasn't sure so I left them.

Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

rfleeg,
Welcome to the GTG Forums, I will be reviewing your HJT log.
Please read "ALL" of the instructions before proceeding:

You are currently running HJT from a temporary directory.
Create a folder in your C:\ drive and rename it something you will remember, such as C:\HijackThis

Copy HijackThis.exe then paste it into the folder you just created. Run it from that location from now on, HJT creates backups that are needed in case of any recovery issues.

Once you have done this, please post back a new HJT log in by using Add Reply

Thanks,
rstones12

rfleeg,

Please read "ALL" of the instructions before proceeding:

You may want to print out these instructions for a reference or you can
save them by copying and pasting them into notepad and saving the text file to the desktop.

Download CleanUp
Install the program, dont run it yet, we will later.

Download CWShredder
And save it to your desktop.
Close all open browser windows and any other open windows.

Install CWShredder, then:

Open CWShredder and click Check for Updates
Then click "FIX"
Once the the program has finished running, click exit.

Close all browsers and open windows, run HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

F1 - win.ini: run=fntldr.exe C:\WINDOWS\..\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\MSInfo\msinfo.exe

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dbzqxt] c:\windows\system32\czgguyf.exe r
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [gos4Rkc8j] umatopl.exe

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - http://207.188.7.150...tzip/RdxIE2.cab

Make sure that you have closed all browsers and open windows except HJT, then click the Fix Checked button. Close HJT.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Enable show hidden files and folders:

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Now using MyComputer, find and remove the following folders/files if found:

C:\windows\system32\czgguyf.exe <-- File
C:\windows\system32\umatopl.exe <-- File
C:\windows\umatopl.exe <-- File

Now run the CleanUp program.

*IMPORTANT NOTE*
CleanUp deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups.
If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp

Running CleanUp
  • Start CleanUp
  • When CleanUp starts go to the Options button (right side of CleanUp screen)
    Uncheck cookies
This is optional, if you leave the box checked it will remove all of your cookies, at this point removing cookies is a good idea.
  • Click OK
  • Then click on the CleanUp button. This will take a short while, let it do its thing.
  • When asked to reboot system select No
  • Close CleanUp
Reboot and post back a new HJT log by using Add Reply

NOTE: In notepad please uncheck word wrap, it make the HJT log hard to read.

Thanks,
rstones12

Everything went as you stated except the F1 - win.ini: run=fntldr.exe....... wasn't there for HJT to fix.........the rest all were

and none of the files seemed to be on the computer to delete after the boot in safe mode.

After I follwed all your instructions as I was rebooting the last time I got a little pop-up window with what appeared to be the microsoft antispyware "shield" in red with a little warning that my computer may be vulnerable because no firewall is running. I should have one running. I've never got this warning before. Did I mess up something? how do I check to see if one is running yet?

um scratch that about how to tell if firewall is running or not. I just remembered.

control panel
windows firewall

when all else fails go with common sense eh? chuckle. Must have just been some kinda fluke warning from rebooting outta safe mode or something. It says it's running.

rfleeg,

OK, lets do the following..

Download FindIt's.zip to your desktop: http://forums.net-integration.net/index.ph...=post&id=142443
  • Create a new folder on your desktop
  • Unzip/extract the files inside that folder you created on your desktop.
  • Open the folder and run FindIt's.bat and wait for notepad to open a text file. It may take awhile so please be patient ...
  • Then post the results here along with a new HJT log by using Add Reply
Thanks,

rstones12,

System seems to be free of the malware/popups/residual effects of past stuff now. Thanks so much! Good riddance Aurora!

System seems to take forever to get up and running though. Any way to clean that stuff and get it going faster? Probably not your area though eh? I know you're a malware expert. Where should I go for that kind of help?

Thanks again so much.

rfleeg,
You can try a couple of things:

I have listed a couple of items from Microsoft:

Defrag Hard Drive:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;314848

ScanDisk or Error Check
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;315265

Here is another good place to start.
http://www.pcpitstop.com/

Use these tools, then post back a new HJT log when you are finished.

Thanks,

rfleeg,

Your HJT log looks good, nice work..

Here are some items that you will want to add to your to-do list:

These are some tips to reduce the potential for Spyware/Adware/Virus infection in the future:
I would strongly recommend reviewing and installing the following applications if you dont currently have them running on your system:

Use Anti-Virus Software
It is very important that your computer has Anti-Virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
See this link for a listing of some online and stand-alone Anti-Virus programs:
Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

Update your AntiVirus Software
It is imperitive that you update your Anti-Virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your Anti-Virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall
I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewalls

Spyware/Adware Detection and Removal Programs:
Understanding Spyware, Browser Hijackers, and DialersAd-Aware SEIf you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to setup and use Ad-Aware SE
How to use Ad-Aware SE to remove Spyware
[/list]Spybot S&DIf you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to setup and use Spybot S&D
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware
[/list]I strongly recommend using both of these programs to catch most spyware/adware

Prevention Programs:
  • SpywareBlaster -- SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • SpywareGuard -- SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad -- IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts File -- The MVPS Hosts File replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
  • Google Toolbar -- Get the free Google Toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other Necessary Programs:
  • A More Secure Browser
Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser.
There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend using Firefox
Be sure to also keep up with Windows and IE updates.

Windows Security and Critical Updates
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Internet Explorer Security and Critical Updates
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Update all these Programs Regularly:Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Thanks,
rstones12
