Help, and i need it badly. Ive had this virus since july fourth and I have a blue screen that says...

critical error in IE has occured (there were some numbers in it if you need them let me know) Error was caused by trojan-spy.html.smitfraud.c

-system may not run in normal mode, please chench you security features

-Run any available antivirus/spyware remover program to fix this problem

when i first got this virus my system couldnt open certain applications becaus i think the virus infected the file extension winninet.dll. I ran a system restore twice and wininet.dll is'nt infected anymore. Then when I was running house call I think from you website my startbar dissappears and all my windows Icons dissappear too. I cant even right click, I can only access programs through the windows task manager. I dont know if the above virus is the one doing this but its the worst virus Ive ever had. Please helP!

Hi Tye,

You probably have more infections on your PC than legitimate and good files !!!!!!!

This is going to take a few iterations but it can be done.

First we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problem.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download CWShredder Here.
Download and install CleanUp! Here

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Update About:Buster

Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
Now close About:Buster

Update CWShredder

Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
Click Check For Update
Close CWShredder

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:

Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
Reboot your computer into safe mode again

Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now run CleanUp!Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Please run an on-line virus scan at TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

first off, THANK YOU,

where I am its hard to get ahold of computer specialists so for this I thak you.

I tried running aboutbuster and it did scan, but right when it reached 100% scanning an error message came up saying that

Runtime error has occured '53'

file not found

I dont know what the deal is but I couldnt get a Log file, but I dont think it found anything, but maybe Im wrong, everything worked fine except for the online scan which, with my 56k would have taken 6 hours!! :tazz:

anyhoo, I really hope that this works out and my screen images come back

Its ok, Try running About:Buster again, then CWShredder as outlined in the previous fix.

It something doesnt run fully then reboot the PC and proceed with the rest of the fix. Run the online scan and let me have the scan report.

Hijack This gives a snapshot of all the process and some of the key settings on your PC. So we need to have a look at it time and again to determine what progress we have made and what still needs to be addressed.

Please print out these instructions or copy them into a text file on your Desktop for easy access.

During the fix, u will be asked to fix some entries, delete some files or uninstall sosme programs. If in case, you do not see those entries / files / programs, please make a note of it. Continue with the fix and in your next post please inform me of all deviations from the fix prescribed.

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

Restart the PC in Safe Mode (repeatedly tap the F8 key when the PC is starting up).

3. Delete Rogue files

Run CleanUp and delete all temp files including temporary internet files

Run Ewido full scan. Let it fix any items it finds.

Locate these files using the Windows Search Function

Clear out the files in the Prefetch folder. Go to start> run> type into the box Prefetch and delete all the files in that folder. Dont delete the folder, only the files in it !!!!!!!!

Reboot the PC in Normal Mode.

Run Hijack This and post a fresh HJT log along with Ewido scan report.

I ran HJT and deleted those files but I dont know how to get into windows explore without a start menu, or how to search for it...

If you can tell me how to do this it would be great

Hi uber doober,

You will have to do this using the task manager !!

Use Ctrl+Alt+Del to open the Task Manager

In your Task Manager, click 'applications' (first tab).
Click the New Task button.
Cick browse.

Now go to C:\Windows and click on - "explore".

Then click open.
In the window where it says 'Create new task', click OK.

Here you can delete the files whose full path names have been given.

You can pop -up the Search Window by pressing the windows key between crtl and Alt keys on the left hand side of the key board and "F". Simultaneously.

If the Search window doesnt pop-up then search for these files -

E6F1873B.DLL
D0CE0C16B1*.*
stlb2.dll
dwcrnt.exe

in C:\Windows and C:\Windows\System32 folders. Delete them, if found !!!

ive tried what you told me but when i found explorer or i right clicked on the computer and pressed explore it told my it could not find c:\WINDOWS

I really hope this doesnt skrew things up too much

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

Close all windows other than Hijack This and click on the button Fix Checked.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and post a new HijackThis Log
