switch between category/classic view has gone

Hi all, i am running Windows XP pro. when you start Windows XP and go into the control panel there are usuall two panes. in the left pane the first item on the list is swith to category view or switch to classic view, depending which one you are in. in my version of XP the left pane isnt even there. it is probably just a simple setting that has been unticked somewhere, but it's really bugging me because i can't find it. does anyone have any ideas please?
