Audio Problem

I am having problems with being able to use Yahoo Voice and Skype. Although I can hear other people talking to me and I can hear myself through my speakers (while not trying voice, just to say my mics work) I am unable to talk to others.
When I try to initiate a Voice session, I get an error

Unable to initialize audio mixer.

The solution that Gateway support gives me is to buy a new sound card. Before I do that, I'd like to know if anyone can help me.
