Well, I am having problems with my RealTek Audio card trying to use Yahoo Voice. I understand that this is a known issue. First, How do I find out EXACTLY what card I have? Where do I find this information?

Hi moondog-
realtek equals AC97 audio. this is an integrated sound chip on the motherboard. while they can work OK, I have seen many problems with them...

however, another common problem seems to be with the yahoo voice thing you mentioned. they seem to have a few difficulties, which are best addressed from their tech support section. its usually related to drivers and such.

to know exactly what you are using, list the make/model of you motherboard (mobo).
another way to find out lots of info about your system is to use everest home. it will give you mobo info, some specifics on your audio, etc.

also check that you have the latest version of directx installed-9.0c

Okay, so, let me ask you this.

Do you know if TeamSpeak or Skype or any other
voice programs work BETTER with RealTek AC97

to be honest, I havent played around with any of the VoIP stuff, so I cant really answer your question.
my cell phone plan still gives me about a kajillion more minutes than I could use per month. guess I'm still a bit old school in that respect. and that is a weird thing to say right there....

most pc audio problems can be cured with updated drivers and directx. if the problem is with the mic not working, run through the troubleshooter under sound/audio devices, it will allow you to configure and test the mic input, so you can see levels working, etc.
some mics just dont seem to work with some sound cards either. its the continuation of the old plug n pray.
if you get into some specifics, I might be able to help you figure it out.

Okay, you already know the sound card is an integrated AC97.
I have a Gateway System. The speakers for the system are also
from Gateway and include a "control box" that sits on the desk.
I can plug my headset/mic "combo" into the front of the "control
box."

The headset/mic combo is from Logitech, I also have another
mic I tried using that is a cheapy freeby by MLi .

I'm not big on all the technical stuff, so if you could tell me
more of WHAT specifics you need.

Oh, one other thing is that when I try to use Skype or Yahoo
to talk voice, I get the error message:

Unable to initialize Audio mixer.

I have also installed the latest DirectX 9.0c and updated my drivers.

ok, that error looks familiar, like the one I saw listed in some posts from a while ago. again I suggest checking out their tech support, they might have something listed about it.

otherwise, use the link to everest home I provided earlier, and attach the report. it will have the all the info you ever wanted about your system.
