We are trying to help a friend whose computer had popped up telling him that he had Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c virus. He had no up to date virus software. He had turned his computer off after that and then when he turned it on Windows would not load unless it was in safemode. He has Windows 2000 Professional. It always freezes on the loading screen. He also does not have connection to the internet, supposedly because of the virus.

We tried to install some programs with little success. Norton wouldn't install as well as adaware or Xoftspy. The only virus software we could get to run was Ewido and it quarantined about 17 infected files, but when we restarted, Windows still would not load unless it was in safe mode.

Could you give us some information on how we can install these programs in safe mode, or go about getting rid of this virus.

We did run HJT on his computer and it worked.
