Hi,

Thanks for your help! I got infected last week when i hooked up my pc directly to the cable modem. I was surprised that despite running microsoft anti-spyware and norton anti-virus, i still got infected.

I ran through the instructions and executed all the steps. But I still get popup ads everytime I start a browser. Other symptoms include slower machine, internet access.

Please see attached for HijackThis log.

Thanks again
Sanjay

Hello sanjay ;)

You do have some malware issues so let's get started :tazz:

Download and install CleanUp! Here
but do not run it yet.
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Rcktaxf] C:\WINNT\System32\??stem32\winspool.exe
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsear...?p=ZSzeb047XXUS
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - http://207.188.7.150...tzip/RdxIE2.cab

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\WINNT\System32\??stem32<<<< please do not delete the system32 folder

Now run cleanup

Reboot into normal mode.run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here with a new hijack log

Thanks

Hello,

Like I mentioned yesterday as soon as my desktop is booted, it starts IE and goes to some URL(that I wasnt quick enough to capture). Sorry.

However, it tried to download an ActiveX control. Thankfully the MS anti-spyware caught it. Here's the URL it was trying to download from:http://cabs.media-motor.net/cabs/joysaver.cab

Apparently, it had already installed the following exe c:\winnt\system32\objsafe.tlb

Here's the log from from MS antispyware.

ActiveX Installations alert

Occured on: 7/14/2005 at 8:00:43 PM

The user administrator, has decided to block the ActiveX Install DemoCtla ({7149E79C-DC19-4C5E-A53C-A54DDF75EEE9}) C:\WINNT\Downloaded Program Files\m67m.ocx.

About ActiveX Installations: ActiveX applications are programs that are downloaded from web sites and are stored on your computer. These applications are stored in C:\windows\Downloaded Program Files. They are also referenced in the registry by their CLSID which is the long string of numbers between the curly braces. There are many legitimate ActiveX applications that Internet Explorer regularly uses. If you are uncertain of the function of an ActiveX application, you can delete it without harm to your computer. If you later find you need this application Windows will automatically re-download it for you.

Here's another entry from MS anti-spyware log:

Startup Registry Files alert

Occured on: 7/14/2005 at 7:57:56 PM

A startup value (Oamc:C:\Program Files\wess\acrs.exe) has been denied permission to be added to your startup registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. This program is in the user's blocked startup file list.

About Startup Registry Files: Startup registry keys are a number of registry entries in the Windows registry that store paths to applications on your computer. Applications that are listed in any of these registry keys and are loaded automatically when Windows boots up. These keys generally apply to Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP, and 2003.

Disclaimer
This service is by no means 100% safe. If this scanner says 'OK', it does not necessarily mean the file is clean. There could be a whole new virus on the loose. NEVER EVER rely on one single product only, not even this service, even though it utilizes several products. Therefore, I cannot and will not be held responsible for any damage caused by results presented by this non-profit online service.

Also, I am aware of the implications of a setup like this. I am sure this whole thing is by no means scientifically correct, since this is a fully automated service (although manual correction is possible). I am aware, in spite of efforts to proactively counter these, false positives might occur, for example. I do not consider this a very big issue, so please do not e-mail me about it. This is a simple online scan service, not the university of Wichita.

Scanning can take a while, since several scanners are being used, plus the fact some scanners use very high levels of (time consuming) heuristics. Scanners used are Linux versions, differences with Windows scanners may or may not occur. Another note: some scanners will only report one virus when scanning archives with multiple pieces of malware.

Virus definitions are updated every hour. There is a 15Mb limit per file. Please refrain from uploading tons of hex-edited or repacked variants of the same sample.

Please do not ask for viruses uploaded here, unless you work for an anti-virus vendor. They are not for trade. This is a legitimate service, not a VX site. Viruses uploaded here will be distributed to antivirus vendors without exception.

Sponsored by donations (in random order) from: Stormbyte Technologies LLC, The ClamAV project, James Love, Gideon Pertzov, Malcolm Murray, Nigel Thomas, Wendy Dickerson, Anthony Midmore, "ethereal", Mark Rubins, Steve S., Eric Johansen, Eric Schechter, Paul Bokel, Wilders Security, Wilfried Lilie, Prevx, SonicWALL, and some people who prefer to remain anonymous... many thanks to all!

Click here to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit. Extract it from the zip file

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure

Disconnect from the internet

Please run the Cleanup program I had you download earlier( dont reboot if it ask)

Now open pocketkillbox Select the option "Delete on reboot".
Now highlight and 'copy' (Ctrl + C) the entire list of filepaths below:

C:\WINUPDATE929452.exe
C:\mt-uninstaller.exe
C:\WINNT\Downloaded Program Files\MediaGatewayX.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\Shex.exe
C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\Installer?.exe

Click 'File' on the killbox menu at the top and choose 'Paste from clipboard'
The entire list should now be in the "Full Path of File to Delete"
field. To check, click on the dropdown-arrow next to that field.
If you expand it, these lines should all be there.

post a new hijack log please and advise of any problems

When I turned on my pc this morning, IE launched and it jumped to http://211.43.20.5/market/blank.html and downloaded something. It made a terrible noise and asked me to install other things(which i declined of course). Thought, you might want to know.

In any case, I followed your steps. After rebooting, I found a file c:/winupdate929r452.exe. I deleted it manually.

Here's the Hijackthis log. Let me know if it looks ok to you.
