I note other posts with this infection, which overwrtes the wallpaper and replaces it with a blue, then white & grey flashing screen.

Could you please advise if there is a solution to this problem or any data you require to assess the problem.

Hello and welcome to Geeks to Go! :tazz: I'm kool808 and I will be helping you today.

We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool [ HiJackThis ], read the short tutorial [ HERE ]

Then post the results of the scan here.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! I will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

I have followed your instructions as best I could understand. The grey-white wallpaper is not removed.

before starting, the standard sweeps of Norton Antivirus and Spysweeper showed all clear!

Running FX1stbar found nothing. In safe mode the first scan of HijackThis notified 16 items - I didn't intend to run it without making your changes but it started anyway. After making the suggested option changes it found 2 more items and removed them all.

House call found malware TROJ1_ANITA

Panda scan found nothing.

CWShredder said no infection

Kasperski found nothing.

I could not understand how to do the logs requested, but below are HijackThis logs, after the second run above and again after running evereything.

The problem remains. The original message screen when infected, which Norton Antivirus removed, said that I would not be able to remove the infection.

Please SAVE THIS PAGE or secure a PRINT COPY of the instructions for reference.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

You are advised to temporarily DISABLE the following Protection Programs, if they are running:

  • Spy Sweeper
(Note: We will re-ENABLE them later after your system is all clean and malware free.)

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
Do NOT run it yet.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite 3.5 here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Do NOT run the scan yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
(How to boot in Safe Mode...)
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!

Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Many thanks for the guidance, the grey white wallpaper is gone, but it is not clear which of your suggested scans was the one to find it.

Firstly, Spysweeper was disabled by temporaily renaming it so it could not start.

Having prepared all the downloads as suggested:

Smit Rem gave a brief message 'succcess' ?? and a log saying 'clean'.

Adware found 24 cookies and 8 objects, all deleted.

Ewido ran for hours and found 9 threats; (8 labelled 'high threat') that were not found by Spysweeper or Norton Antivirus. I think these are all named on the attached log.

Rebooted and ran Panda - nothing found.

For myself and other readers of this topic it might be useful to know which of the logged viruses was the grey-white wallpaper and what cleared it.

many thanks

good job, you did it well. You missed the Hijackthis log.

Desktop hijacking may have several causes. It may come from the infections after installing a PS Guard, Antivirus Gold or a trojan.Smitfraud.html. You will be infected when you go to websites or click a URL that contains malicious stealth controls then automatically install themselves on your unprotected system. The SmitRem tool was designed to target those files as well as registries attached to those infections.

After we can conclude your logs and system are all clean I will give you tips to protect your system and prevent future re-infections. ;) :tazz:

it highly recommended that you post the logs normally. Please do NOT attach the logs requested.

Reboot in SAFE MODE. (How to boot in Safe Mode...)

be sure to view hidden and system files!
search for this file/folder then delete

C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download\S-1-5-18\2ae81d9d05bbae1633be22b611001660\update\ <-- whole folder

empty recycle bin.

Please close all remaining windows, disconnect from the internet, open HijackThis then click SCAN. Please put a check on the following items listed below:

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {BE2F2769-8A63-4bc7-8A99-06C2C4AD7B9B} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\crtv2_32.dll (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {BE2F2769-8A63-4bc7-8A99-06C2C4AD7B9B} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\crtv2_32.dll (file missing) (HKCU)

Make sure to double check the items you have selected, then click Fix Checked.

reboot back in normal mode.

post a new hijackthis log.
