everytime i open a webbrowser...i get this pop-up message:

RPCSS
"this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shutdown"

"RPCSS caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown> at 000:01704129"

It seems to have stopped all of my internet connecting programs from operating.

Here is my log, thanks:

Did you just install some new software? Do you know what the <unknown> module is?

Have you updated all your critical updates in windows?

Thanks. I found out some information on the error, but need those questions answered. Someone will be along to help you shortly.

well the night before it crashed and started bringing up that message...i installed the "logitech" driver for my webcam. I usually never leave my AOL instant messenger on...but did for that night. The next morning when i logged off and restarted my computer because it was acting very sluggish, it popped up that window as soon as windows started. Then i tried visit a website and it wouldn't let me access the web. It kept popping up that error message everytime i tried. Anything that deals with the net...it pops up that message and won't let me use that program. I really don't wanna reformat because i have so much stuff that i can't save right now. Anyways, thanks for your help guys, hopefully you can help me get rid of this problem!

Hi one reason:

Been looking at this for a long time and have some questions before we start trying to fix it.

First some questions: Is this your home page?

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://channels.aimt.../aimtoolbar.jsp

Read this note on the following entry: MS TV Viewer Post Setup Program. Part of MS WebTV for Windows. Used to display TV on your PC via a compatible video card with in-built tuner (such as ATI All-In-Wonder). If you don't use it - uninstall it
Is this what you installed the other night?

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bpcpost.exe] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\bpcpost.exe

Note on following: MS WebTV for Windows. Used to display TV on your PC via a compatible video card with in-built tuner (such as ATI All-In-Wonder). If you don't use it - uninstall it
Is this what you installed the other night?

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [TVWakeup] C:\Progra~1\TVView~1\tvwakeup.exe

Also, read this:

http://support.micro...om/?kbid=192015

Do you know what the unknown module is?

Thanks. <_<

I don't know where that came from...when i go to the tools option in my webbrowser, it still has my homepage set as "www.google.com".

I do not use the web TV for windows and will uninstall it tonight. Actually i think i had removed it the same night i installed the logitech cam driver. I hope it didn't re-install it instead!

"O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [bpcpost.exe] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\bpcpost.exe"

The line above; whenever windows starts and everything is loading, i do the "CTRL, ALT, DEL" keys and the bpcpost.exe is the only file i see that i don't recognize. i tried to "end task" on it one time but it still didn't have any effect on how my computer was effected.

To my knowledge, the ONLY thing i loaded that night was the quickcam driver and im pretty sure i thought i un-installed the Web TV for Windows. The only other thing i did different that night was leave my aol instant messenger on.

Download the latest version of Ad-Aware from here (if you already have Ad-Aware installed, make sure that it is the latest version and always go online and update it before you run it).

Download Lavasoft's VX2 Cleaner plug-in here
http://www.lavasoftu...x2cleaner.shtml

How to use Lavasoft's VX2 Cleaner plug-in

- Close Ad-Aware 6 and Ad-Watch (if running)
- Download the free VX2 Cleaner at http://updates.ls-se...lvx2cleaner.exe
- Install the VX2 Cleaner
- Start Ad-Aware 6
- Go to "Plug-ins"
- Select the VX2 Cleaner plug-in and click "Run Plugin"
- If your computer isn't infected, click "Close".

If your computer is infected

- Select "Clean system"
- Reboot your computer
- Scan your computer with Ad-Aware
- Remove any VX2 objects detected
- Reboot your computer again
- Run a second scan to make sure the files have been removed from your computer

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. <_<

I just finished doing everything you told me to do. there was no infection and it seems like that had nothing to do with the problem. I wonder what in the world it could be...i remember you telling me that my homepage was set to something else but when i go under the webbrowser options, it tells me that its still set to google.com. Anyways, here is the new log...

bpcpost.exe is Microsoft TV Viewer Post Setup Program. Located in "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\" on Windows 98.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://channels.aimt.../aimtoolbar.jsp

Please delete your temporary files by deleting all files and folders that are in those folders (do not delete the temp folder itself) like for example
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\
C:\Temp\
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\
Also delete your Temporary Internet Files, be sure to also select delete all offline content.

Reboot and post a new log and let me know how the system is running. What kind of problems are you still having? You do run AIM, right?

I did as you told me...and after it rebooted, the Ad-watch program detected a registry modification. The details look like this:

-Root: HKEY_CURRENT USER
-Key: Software\Microsoft\Internet\Main
-Value: Search Bar
-Data: http://channels.aimt.../aimtoolbar.jsp
-New Data: possible browserhijack attempt (blocked)

So it looks like its definetely the AIM program that had something to do with this. The line you told me to remove from hijackthis, it comes back after i try to start internet explorer (still not working) or reboot my computer. Do i have to go into the actual directory and do something? Oh i almost forgot, here is the new log from hijackthis...
