well, I have windows xp pro at work. every once in a while I get something similar. can't map drivers, active windows issues, ect. Normally a reboot resolves the issue.
if he doesn't have sp2 then I would recomend installing it. if he does I would still reinstall it and then check for any updates from ms that he might be missing.

Reboot does not resolve the issue. I did a search for each task running on liutilities.com but nothing seemed unusual. Is there a way to cut and past the processes tab to show you? If I check the performance tab and 2 windows are open, it some times says that 80-90% of the cpu is being used. Then if I don't click anything it eventually goes down to a minimal amount.

then open MSPAINT, hit ctrl-V
then save it, and attach it....a better choice might be to download process explorer from here, and doing the same thing (think task manager on steroids)

Next time the issue occurs, please note the time and reboot. then
start > run, type
eventvwr.msc
<enter>
Look under systems and applications for items with red Xs that happened at the SAME time as your problem...list them here.[/code]
