I'll have to check with the coding group to see how we can work around this. It may take a couple of days. In the mean time, please do the following cleanup:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Well I know why the regfix didn't work on that particular 018....

Curious?.....

I took the regfix apart and discovered that your variant isn't covered under this regfix. It may be a new variant. Aren't I smart. RegFixes are not my specialty so we will wait for the coders but I think they will need some info from you.

1. To obtain this info, they will probably ask you (and I am asking also to get a head start) to download a free program called Registrar Lite from HERE to your Desktop.

2. Install the program to their recommended location and put an icon on your desktop for easy retrieval.

Ok I have downloaded the program that you have asked me to so that it will be there for when they need the information.

And yes you are smart.... I would never have been able to figure out how to get this off of here if it was not for you... I really do appreciate it.

My computer is still running a little slow but at least it is almost fixed.

Thank you again

1. We would like you to open Registrar Lite that I asked you to download last night.

2. In the top Address Bar, please paste the following string:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/xml

and click on the GO button in the upper right hand corner of the window.

3. This should bring you to a key. In the right hand pane, there will be "values" for this key. Please copy and Paste the content of this right hand pane into your reply.

Regards,

Try this:

1. Backup the registry by going to Start>Run> and type "regedit" without the quotes. Then on the file menu choose ‘export’ in XP. Export the file to your Desktop.

If a restore of the registry is required in case of emergency, just click on the exported regfile on your desktop, and answer YES to the question whether you want to merge this file with the registry. Wait until you get a message saying something like Merge Successfull.

2. Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into the new document. Save it to your desktop as new018.reg and as "AllFiles" as file type.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Chp.CallThrough]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Chp.CallThrough.1]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{6585E5B4-4D2A-4A1D-A219-4102C64BA999}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{A771FB97-B13E-46E2-973A-1CF0B693D1BC}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{D962EF38-5FB0-4761-8638-C86F085E25E6}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\TypeLib\{8427BD70-5444-46CE-B15D-19E9CB49DF64}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\application/octet-stream]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/html]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/webviewhtml]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/xml]

3. Locate new018.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer Yes and wait for a message to appear similar to Merged Successfully.

4. Reboot your computer.

3. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Trevuren

I am so happy that my homepage is staying where I put it... also I ran my virus scan last night and it only found one problem versus the 2000 it found before you helped me....

Your log looks really good Katiean. Unfortunately, I am unable to be of much help with your other problems as my field is strictly malware related problems. Here is the link to the other forums that are available at Geeks and staffed by very knowledgeable people in their field:

http://www.geekstogo...dex.php?act=idx

==============================================

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Regards,

Trevuren

I really can not thank you enough for your help.... this had been really stressing me out and I am so happy now that I have gotten it fixed.

One last question... can I remove from my desktop all of the items and programs that you had me put there.... and would I delete them from the computer completely or just remove them from the desktop???

And when I find someone with a paypal account I will be sure to make a donation to you... your help has been way more than I could ask for and deserves something in return.

Thank you again
