My best advice after many years of working with 98 is this...
If this is a very recent install, back up your data, reformat your drive, make sure the Win98 CD is cleaned off, and reinstall the OS again.
98 is notorious for bad installs and the worst thing you can do is accept a possible bad install. I guarantee somewhere down the line 98 will cough worse than it's doing right now.
Clean installs of 98 go very smoothly and absolutely no failures should occur.

I will, but first I need to ask you a question. You say you did a scratch installation. Am I to understand you have a full version Win98 CD and not a Win95 upgrade cd?
Please specify which you have.

I apologize for not getting back to you sooner.
The reason I didn't tell you how to format is because I needed to verify you had the full version of 98... if it was an upgrade version, then you wouldn't want to format the drive because if you did, you wouldn't be able to boot to the upgrade cd.
But, that's a bit irrelevant now as you seem to have found how to do it.
What are you doing before the computer freezes or does it freeze as soon as you turn it on?
Win98 should not just freeze directly after a clean install.
What are the systems specs? Motherboard, processor, video card.
Did you load the motherboard drivers? Win98 requires you load chipset drivers prior to loading video drivers and such.
