are any of these lights on:
Power LED
ADSL LED illuminates as soon as a DSL signal is detected and settles down to permanently on once the router has synchronised with the DSL line card at the exchange.
Act indicates activity across the ADSL line, and reflects both up and downstream activity.
LAN1 - LAN4 are illuminated once a PC is connected to the corresponding LAN port at the rear of the router. The LED will flicker off/on when activity occurs, and there appears to be no differentiation between 10 and 100Mbps connections.
Wireless - flashes when you have activity across the wireless network of the router.
are the lights on your nic card on?

I'll have to check all this this evening - not in front of PC now. Does the serial port need to be connected in order for the router/modem to work? Or is all the communication carried through ethernet cable to the PC? Thanks for your help, btw

that serial cable is a management port....it's only used if you can't access the management interface on the router itself.....which....can you?

nope, not thus far. From what I can tell, I'm supposed to type in the IP address [192.168.7.2] into IE and the modem/router console will appear. I can't even get to this stage.

I'm one step closer! I can almost feel the internet connection........but following the Solwise instructions doesn't seem to get me very far. I've pinged the router so all is fine.
