Altnet [RESOLVED]

For the last two months I have used a number of programmes to remove Altnet without success. Programmes used inc. Spybot 1.3 & 1.4, Ad-Aware SE, X-Cleaner amonst others. My daughter did have Kaazzaa at one time but I got rid of that and used Kazzabegone all to no avail!!

Help me please!

Spybot tells me that:

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Download, install, and update Ewido Security Suite

Install ewido security suite
Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

On the left hand side of the main screen click update
Click on Start

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
After the updates are installed, exit Ewido

Please download Cleanup from here:
Cleanup. Do not run it yet.

Set up PC to show hidden files.(Click link if you do not know how)
Show hidden files

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:

Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files
Scan local drives for temporary files
Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

After Cleanup! is finished:

Run Ewido.
Click on full system scan
Let the program scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "clean", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report[list]
[*]Click Save report
[*]Save the report to your desktop
[*]Exit Ewido

Now scan with HJT and check the following entries if they still exist:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8E13DDE1-E013-47ec-9C4C-27C2F78BDD26} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)O9 - Extra button: Real.com - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\Shdocvw.dll

Ensure no windows open except HJT and click fix checked

Using windows explorer locate and delete the following file if found

C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dll

Now reboot pc normally.

Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Rescan with HJT and post the log back, with the ewido and panda logs.

Hi, had a chance to run your suggestions tonigh . Unfortunately we still have Altnet resident, as you will see from the following logs.
BTW Couldn't find C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dll.
Seems like further work needed!

Thats looking much better,

Open Notepad, and copy everything in the code box below and paste it into a new notepad file. Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as fixme.reg on your Desktop. Make sure there is NO blank line above "REGEDIT4"!

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ALTNET]

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. When it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click YES.

Now Reboot your PC into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key whilst it starts up and select Safe Mode option.

Ensure pc setup to show hidden files and using windows explorer locate and delete the following file.

C:\WINDOWS\smdat32m.sys

Restart your pc normally, rescan with HJT and post the log back.

Well it appears that Altnet is still hanging on in there according to Spybot!!!!

The pc has been used since yesterday before I could run the last change to the Registry.

Open Notepad, and copy everything in the code box below and paste it into a new notepad file. Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as fixme.reg on your Desktop. Make sure there is NO blank line above "REGEDIT4"!

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ALTNET]

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. When it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click YES.

Reboot pc normally and rescan with Panda let me know the result

Also ensure that you Uninstall Altnet from the Control Panel, option Add or Remove programs, by deleting the application named Peer Points Manager if present

Peer Points Manager not present. Have rub Panda scan again with the following result:

Are you confident in going into registery?

If so do the following:

Click Start > Run.
Type regedit
Click OK.

Navigate to and delete the following keys, if present:

Hello again!

Out of the list I only found and deleted:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Management\ARPCache\AltnetDM

I did locate:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\AltnetDM

But when I tried to delete a message came up:
"Cannot delete Altnet - Error while deleting key"

I ran Panda anyway and the log is again as follows:

Using windows explorer, Navigate to

%ProgramFiles%\Altnet and delete this folder if it exists

%Windir%\Fonts and delete the following files if they exist

Open the registry (Start->Run->regedit) and select the following keys if present:

Start with the top folder which is Altnet and work down and follow these instruction to change the permission for all folders.

Right click on Altnet then click on permission, click on add, click on advanced, click on find now, and look for your log on name and click on okay twice to get back to permissions for Altnet. Now, put a check mark in the boxes for allow after click on advanced, click on the tab for owner and highligt your log under \'change owner to\' and check the box that say\'s : \'Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects\\' and click on ok, click on apply and click ok. Continue the same for the rest of the folders listed.

After the changing the permission, end the ?Altnet? process from the Task Manager (ctrl-alt-delete). Having successfully done this you should be able to delete the entire HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ALTNET in regedit.
