Freeware app: DVD decoder needed

I am trying to get a machine up and running and have succeeded up the dvd. It is a Samsung and I found the driver/firmware there. However no videos can be played as I get the error message about missing dvd decoders. I tried DirectDVD and that works but it is a shareware program. Is there user friendly freeware out there?

VideoLAN is a great program, another nice light weight multimedia player with DVD playback support is the open-source Media Player Classic. This is my main multimedia player and runs well on most systems due to it's small memory foot print. Check it out at:
