Howdy, It's Alex here - and thank heavens for you guys

I got this beauty a few days ago (yes Ok, I confess, after visiting a sexy desktop site - I am being punished, but i got a blue desktop! )

Anyhoo, - i ran Norton which came with my computer, updated it, got nowhere, googled to you and read through the relevant threads - it's nice to know I'm not alone.

I have followed the "start here" instructions, run CleanUp, Adaware, CWshredder, Spybot, Ewido and scanned with Trend and Panda.

They found a few things, and I think I deleted a file I shouldn't have, because I now get an error message about a missing dll file (its the first R1 line in the hijackthis log following).

But other than that not much has changed, except when I first was infected, Norton was popping up Bloodhound .32.EP warnings, four in succession, every couple of minutes, now that's changed to W32.Desktophijack. The PSguard box pops up at start - I see it in programs to uninstall, but should do that in safe-mode, is that right? Only two tabs show when I right-click on desktop, and no homepage on IE (I'm gonna put in Mozilla once this is cleared up - I like how you guys steer clear of recommending people change browsers )


I have Smitrem unzipped to a folder on my Desktop, and a link to panda scan, as per instructions for other victims (chillies, ttteeam, diem, trubrecht) but realise that every case is a bit different, depending on the hjt log?.

Sooo, if someone could take a look, please?

Oh, one other thing is, I am running XPpro SE, and cannot seem to get into safemode with F8. I've tried tapping it continuously and holding it down, and the one time I did get a Dos-type screen, there was no option!, only to to carry on loading windows I'll keep trying until I get a reply.

. Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window. (make sure you have signed in first)
. In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
. If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there

B. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

C. Your system has one of the many variants of the About:Blank infection

1. Download CWShredder

If you are using anything other than Windows xp you may need a zip program.
Please download the evaluation version of Winzip.


2. Download SpSeHjfix.zip to the desktop.

• Then right click on the desktop and select new >folder, name it spfix
• Unzip SpSeHjfix.zip into the new folder.

3. Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.

• Run 'SpSeHjfix'. and click on "Start Disinfection".
• When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
• The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage.

4. Once it is finished, run CWShredder - Hit The FIX button!

5. Reboot and post a new HJT log and the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix'.

Warning Note: On a few occasions it has been reported that after using the SPSEHjfix you cannot open Internet Explorer. To fix this, go into Control Panel >Internet Options >Programs & press reset web settings, then you can set your home page to what you want on the general tab.

Hi Trevuren and thanks for helping - you guys seem really busy at the moment, or is it always like this?

thanks for the note about resetting IE - it didn't work first time, and now it is reset to my normal homepage, and the about: blank line is gone. Blue screen and PSguard still there, but all the tabs have returned to the desktop properties . . .

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:

Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

Now with all windows closed other than HJT[/url], click Fix checked and EXIT the program.


Now, using Windows Explorer, DELETE the following files/folders (with all their content), [u]if they still exist:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\intel32.exe
C:\Program Files\mtd2002

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.


Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.


Run Ewido:

• Click on scanner
• Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
• When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
• When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

OK, so I did all that more or less, and just a couple of things to report.

I entered Safe Mode via running msconfig and selecting diagnostic settings and rebooting. I still cannot get F8 to bite on this thing.

the first line was now set to my home page;
the third line wasn't there,
nor ( from memory) were the intel32.exe or the PSGuard lines.

The mtdserver I left, because I've established it is a Vietnamese/English translation programme installed by the computer's previous owner, well before any virus problems manifested. I also left that folder in C:\Program Files.

I could not find C:\windows\system32\intel32.exe. A search found a file called C:\windows\Prefetch.intel32.exe-2a68ede5.pf, of 8kb.

However, i see in the hjt log taken when running in normal mode that both this file and the PSGuard are still there (although psguard no longer pops up at start) - should I check them for removal running in normal mode?

On running the Panda Activescan, I did not see the autoclean box, so presumably the threats it identified are still present. Can I remove them manually?

You are still infected by not deleting those folders.

Please do this first.

• Download, install, update, configure, and run Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06.
  • Download Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06:
    • Download Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.05.
    • Save aawsepersonal.exe to a convenient location.
  • Install Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06:
    • Double-click on aawsepersonal.exe to install the program.
    • Follow the default settings for installation.
    • After the program has finished installing uncheck the "Perform a full system scan now", "Update definition file now", and "Open the help file now" boxes.
  • Update Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06:
    • Double-click the Ad-Aware SE Personal icon on your desktop.
    • Click "Check for updates now" then click "Connect".
    • It will check for any updates. If any are found click "OK" to download and install the updates. Once it has finished click "Finish".
  • Configure Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06:
    • Click on the Gear button at the top of the window.
    • Click "General" on the left hand side to display the General Settings box.
      • Make sure these items have a green check next to them. If they do not, click once on the circle next to them to put a green checkmark in it.:
      • "Automatically save logfile"
      • "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"
      • "Safe Mode (always request confirmation)"
      • "Prompt to update outdated definitions" - change to 7 days from the default 14.
  • Click "Scanning" on the left hand side to display the Scan Settings box.
    • Make sure these items have a green check next to them. If they do not, click once on the circle next to them to put a green checkmark in it.:
    • "Scan within archives"
    • "Select drives & folders to scan" - select your hard drive(s).
    • "Scan active processes"
    • "Scan registry"
    • "Deep-scan registry"
    • "Scan my IE favorites for banned URLs"

  • Click "Advanced" on the left hand side to display the Advanced Settings box.

  • Click "Defaults" on the left hand side to display the Default Settings box.

    • Click the + (plus) sign next to the Log Files section. This will expand the section.

      • "Include basic Ad-Aware settings in log file"
      • "Include additional Ad-Aware settings in log file"
      • "Include reference summary in log file"

      • "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only"

    • Click the + (plus) sign next to the Cleaning Engine section. This will expand the section.
    • Make sure these items have a green check next to them. If they do not, click once on the circle next to them to put a green checkmark in it.:
      • "Always try to unload modules before deletion"
      • "During removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary"
      • "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot"
      • "Delete quarantined objects after restoring"
  • Once you are done with these settings, click "Proceed" to save them.
  • This will take you back to the main screen.
• Run Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06:
  • Click the "Start" button.
  • Uncheck the "Search for negligible risk entries" entry.
  • Choose the "Use custom scanning options" scan mode.
  • Click the "Next" button.
  • Ad-Aware will begin to scan for malware residing on your computer.
  • Allow the scan to finish.
  • Right-click on any entry in the list and click "Select All" to select the whole list.
  • Click "Next" and choose "OK" at the prompt to quarantine and remove the objects.

Note: I strongly recommend you get rid of the server folder unless you use it. I am unable to guarantee how safe it is. If you decide to keep it, just disregard all instructions pertaining to its removal in the following procedures.

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:

Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

Using Windows Explorer, please locate and DELETE the following files/folders (with all their content), if they are still present:

C:\Program Files\PSGuard<===Folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\intel32.exe
C:\Program Files\mtd2002<===Folder

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply. We need these logs to eradicate what will be left of the infections.
Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.


Run Ewido:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
• You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
• If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
• DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
• If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

By server folder, do you mean the mtd thing?

Also, I already have the smitrem, ewido, panda set up - do I re-download and replace, or uninstall first, or will the links etc i installed and used yesterday be OK?

And is the safe mode procedure i described, via msconfig, OK?

Hi again,

sorry to be a pain, but

the 04-hklm\.... files singled out don't show up in the hjt scan in safe mode, only in normal mode. Should I check and delete when running the scan in normal?

And, the files\folders I should look for in Windows explorer are not there in safe mode or normal mode, except the mtd2002. Both that and PSGuard are sitting in the intstall/uninstall list in Control Panel

And if the queue in my little town was anything to go by, you better leave early!

1. Run HJT in Normal mode and attempt to delete them in Normal Mode also.

2. Under no circcumstances should you remove PSGuard through the Add/Remove programs feature of Control Panel. I NEVER trust the people to properly uninstall the garbage that they put there in the first place.

3. After you have gone as far as you can, please post a fresh HJT log for review.

4. The queue wasn't too long. I was about 6th at my cash register. It was a new store, just opened a couple of weeks ago and they had about 1000 books available. So I am in the wife's good books for a couple of days.

Well, I thought I might not hear from you for a couple of days, so i went ahead and deleted those files in normal mode, ran all the scans and then looked in add/remove. PSGuard and the other one, called Lac Viet, were still there, but when i clicked on them, they said they must have been removed already, and their logos were removed.

Then I rebooted and rescanned with HJT.
