last weekend i had this problem with svchost.exe using alot of my cpu causing my whole system to be very slow and newer games were not playable, although i should run smoothly. When all sorts of antivirus\anti-adware\spyware did not help at all, I at last formatted my C: and installed a clean winxp. I was at a LAN-party this weekend and after the format my computer ran smoothly and GTA:San Andreas was no problem. svchost.exe did never go over 5% as far as i know. Now, some 6-7 days later the same svchost.exe problem is back and the computer is again slow and games impossible to play. Since Im very careful about what programs i install and what click at when surfing the net i dont think its any form of virus.
I could add that svchost.exe is at 10-15% when i just rebooted, and slowly builds up.. and after an hour or so it is usually stabile around 60-90%

I'll post my hijackthislog anyway, and hopes for some good advices!

best regards
OveN

Which sound card do u have?
From ur log it says u traces of two sound cards, viz:
Creative and C-Media.
That might be causing the slow down.

Do u have a Four-speaker setup with ur Creative Sound Card?
If not then u can fix C:\WINDOWS\System32\devldr32.exe from HJT.
I seen on some sites that people have reported it slows down their PC.
Also b4 u fix it in HJT, make sure u extract HJT to a proper folder; so that a backup is created incase u want to rollback. If u run HJT directly from the
zip file, no backup will be created.

yes i Have a 4 speaker + sub connected with my creative soundcard.

but another thing; Ive always stayed away from installing WinXP service pack 2, because of the bad reputation. Should i install sp2? I have sp1 and all other updates available

Its always good to upgrade to SP2.
Afterwards, if u dont like it then u can always uninstall it.

If u are not usin C-Media Sound Card. U can fix the following line from HJT.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Cmaudio] RunDll32 cmicnfg.cpl,CMICtrlWnd .

P.S: Dont 4get to extract HJT to a proper folder, otherwise it wont create backups

Ok, ive fixed the last line you mentioned, and started downloading sp2, which for some reason is extremely slow. But i have to go to work now. thanks for your support, if you recall any other solution write it here and ill check it later tonight. Ill paste my new hijackthis file in case its useful.

btw, svchost.exe cpu usage is now around 55-60%

thanks
