Can you guys please help me... could you please look at my Hijackthis and tell me what to remove.

2 hours ago I got the Antivirus Gold desktop, and I deleted that with the help of this forum. But I still have the oneclicksearch thing and I keep getting popups... search and destroy doesnt delete them, neither does adaware 6.

Hi Alex and welcome to Geeks to Go. My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:

Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

Now with all windows closed other than HJT[/url], click Fix checked and EXIT the program.


Now, using Windows Explorer, DELETE the following files/folders (with all their content), [u]if they still exist:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\hp688D.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\web<===Folder

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.


Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.


Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Hi Trevuren, thank you so much for the quick reply!! I have been doing your thing for a couple of hours now... all the scans took like an hour per program ;)

I think I got rid of everything, because I haven't got any popups and weird stuff going on. Only when I look at my hijack log I see 2x msmsgs.exe but I can't find the file at that location.. should I delete those two also?

I just noticed it was the folder called "MESSENGER" not Microsoft Messenger. I deleted the whole directory, and after the hijackthis I removed the two lines, because it now said "file missing".

Your log looks pretty good. How is the system? If there are no more malware-related issues give me the OK and we can commence our final but essential cleanup procedures.

Trevuren, I think everything is ok now. Norton Antivirus was pretty f*cked up, but I uninstalled it. If it can't prevent that crap to get on my pc I don't need it. Do you prefer another good antivirus program? I'm willing to buy it but I must know if it's good. I have tried spywaredoctor once and it deleted a hard virus that Norton not even recognised.

I also stopped using IE and I now use Firefox internet browser.

Oh yeah by the way, are your replies standard replies? Because rebooting in save mode with WinXP does not work by pressing F8. You have to go to msconfig and to the tab Boot.ini and check safeboot. I'm glad I knew that otherwise your advise did not work for me :tazz:

1. There are 2 ways to Boot into Safe Mode with Windows XP:

Check HERE

The F8 method which most people use and the msconfig method. :tazz:

If my advice had not worked for you, you would undoubtedly have told me and then I would have had you use the msconfig mode

2. Norton is a very good system. I prefer Kaspersky myself, others swear by NOD32. Kaspersky takes up more resources that NOD32 but what a workhorse!!

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
2. Left click on "System Restore Tab"
3. Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
4. Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
1.Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
2.Click on "Apply"

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.


3. Finally, Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.


Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
